| Really confused now, need more input on dog food... I posted this morning about going to get Maggie new dog food because of continued bladder infections. You were all so nice to respond so quickly. I told hubby that we would have to wait til this afternoon to go because I want to be sure and get right thing. Meanwhile I called the All Natural Pet Food Store - they are telling me that I should give her something with as few ingredients as possible. They recommend either California Natural or Breeder's Choice Pinnacle, and after those two they recommend Natural Balance. Other information online is telling me that the acidity in the dog food is important, so naturally my head is spinning with all this information. Can some of you tell me if she is giving me good information? Should I give her the California Natural or Breeder's Choice? I trust you guys more than the Pet Food Store..... Thanks again for ALL the help, it's so appreciated. Jan |

| Jen, To be honest with you they are really giving you good advice believe it or not! I actually trust the Pet health Store I go to becaus ethey are really knowledable. I had tried for months to get Abby to stick to one type of food and I did everything and I went in I told the sales girl everything that has been going on and she recommended the Freeze Dried Raw and it has worked. Ask them if there is a return policy for the food? The place I go to allows that. I believe that the recommendations they gave you excellent. My vet actually recommends California Natural (Abby didnt like it tho - she is very picky - dont rely on my dog for any food reviews except for stella and chewys, LOL) maybe you should call your vet and see if he/she is familiar with dog food. I know mine is and he is very helpful. Hope this helps!

| asking my vet... i have no faith in my vet, and am going to ask the all natural store if they can recommend a vet who approves in a more holistic approach. i'm not impressed with this vet, i have two friends who use him and they are both switching away from him, too. he's old and tired, doesn't keep up with current trends and is just in it for the money, imo. i'm just grateful for this board, because you all love your fur kids like i do and want whats best for them... jan all the latest from heavensville... |

| I am sorry to hear that your vet is bascially just in it for the money. I think that you are right ask the pet food store for a recommendation and see how it goes from there. But like i said a lot of ppl here feed different types of food but the majority agree that foods like royal canine and eukanuba iams pedigree arent that great for put babies. But like i said the store is giving you really great recommendations. Remember this a natural pet Food Store and not a regular pet food store that just stacks the food in the shelf and have no knowledge of what they are providing IMO. There is a difference and they actually listen to you and try to help you and from what i can see they have done just that.

| I fed Jezebel Eukanuba when I first purchased her because that what her breeder fed her. Meanwhile, my vet was trying to push Science Diet on me. I said no way, because I knew it was bad. After Jezebel stated getting constipated I did some research. Come to find out Eukanuba is just as bad! Its filled with by-products and fillers. It took me sometime, but after doing tons of dog food research, I found one that I'm happy with, and I love the ingredients. It has no animal by-products, no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. Its ingredients include real deboned chicken, oatmeal, brown rice, tomatoes, carrots, spinach, sweet potatoes, apples, and blueberries.

| I would be very concerned that this is a recurrent issue. No dog food (within reason) should keep causing this problem. What tests has the vet done so far?

| tests urinalysis, which told him what antibiotic to give her, and x-rays 3 months ago which showed up nothing abnormal. my neighbor, who is a retired vet, suggested that perhaps she has bladder stones that are too small to show up on xrays, and told me i should try dissolving them by diet. he recommended prescription dog food from science diet - but i don't think i want to do that, i prefer all natural. that's why i'm trying to get information from this board. my current vet i'm not pleased with, i'm going to be checking into finding another one who believes in a more holistic approach. |

Some stones do not show up on xray, only ultrasound. Also, these stones are the ones that Yorkies get who have liver shunt. Frequent urinary tract infections is a symptom of liver shunt, so she needs to be bile acid tested. If you want to dissolve the stones, I think you will need to go with a prescription diet. No other diet is designed to do that (unless you homecook and get a recipe from a nutritionist) as far as I know. Not all stones can be treated with diet either. Ellie had a similar issue where she was diagnosed with a UTI and medicated. She kept peeing where she wasn't supposed to and the xray showed nothing. Urine culture showed nothing. Ultrasound showed nothing. Her bile acids are way too high though, so it is hard to say. By the way, did your vet do a urine culture and look for crystals?

| bile acid test How do they test bile acid, is it an invasive procedure or is it done thru blood work? He did a urine culture the last time this happened six months ago, but not this time, he just prescribed amoxicillin. |

| It is a blood test, then the dog eats and two hours later another blood test is done.

Where is there an all natural pet food store in Evansville? Have you checked out Highland Veterinary Center. I think they are into all the holistic approaches to animal care. Tammy

| Ask your vet to tell you what type of crystals he found...This will help you determine what ingredients you should stay away from as far as dog food is concerned.
