I have frozen them just b/c when I first got them, I only had Max, and they usually come about 6 in a package, and I don't give them every day, so I figured it would be best if I gave him one and froze the rest and just thawed as I needed them. What I SHOULD have done I think now, is to have opened up the package and removed the marrow from the bones, since I take it out anyhow...and THEN frozen them. It would make treat time so much easier b/c they know when I take them out to thaw and then they are obsessed with them, LOL. And I can't get the marrow out til they thaw out at least a little bit! So, that's my new plan, but it would be good to know if they should be frozen first before giving them any!

| My Little Man! Donating Member | I just got those marrow bones, cleaned them out and its in the freezer now. Now my question is after your dog is done chewing that bone do you throw it out or you can save it for another time? I tried to search the forums about it but couldnt get the answer. I would assume if its raw after they are done you should throw it out? Am I right?

. Plus, I'm not sure if they might get weaker with age and them chewing on them more. But actually, mine chew on them til they must be devoid of any flavor and then they're not interested in it anymore.

OMG thank you for posting about the marrow bones..never knew that we could give them to our Yorkies. I would definitely have to cut down as Izzy is a tiny thing.

| Sophie has been chewing on hers for a while now and the bone she has is still really sturdy. I think when it starts to wear down a bit more I'll toss it. She doesn't take it outside...she hides in her spot under the bed |

| My Lil Man! Donating Member | Ok I have a few questions on marrow bones....first of all...if I get one and push the center out and freeze it and then give it to Reeses...is that the right way to do it without worrying about it causing problems. He hasnt had any pancreitis problems but I would rather avoid things that arent good for those who have jsut to keep from the problem occuring. lol...if that makes any sense. Lol. Also, if we push out the marrow will it still clean their teeth or is the marrow what cleans them?? Secondly, do they just chew on the bone and nothing happen or do they actually chew it up and eat it like a bully stick or something? Ive got to start doing something to avoid having to take Reeses to have his teeth cleaned at the vet. His teeth dont look bad and I want to keep it that way and hopefully make them even better looking!! Lol. Thanks!! |

He worked on that bone for the whole day and then he played with it. After that he was pretty much done so I threw it out the same day.

The bone is cleaning the teeth. I personally dont give Maxi bone with the marrow in it. I completely take it out and wash it and clean even the outside of the bone so there is no meat on it. Maxi doesnt eat raw at all so I thought it would be the best to completely clean it out. They chew and nothing happens to the bone. Its pretty thick and the only thing you can see is little lines on it as if the dog was bitting the bone.

| FINALLY I have found a place the orders them by the 50 lb box. Hes says he splints them down the middle. He actually called them a beef rib. Is this what I am looking for? I can buy extra and ship them to you guys if anybody is interested. I have called like 15 grocery stores and no one has them. It may be next week before I can get there to pick them up the place it about 45 mins from me. He said they were like a 1.00 a pound. So p.m. me if anyone is interested so I can pick up extra, Im not sure if they have to be kept cold so it may not be to where the can be shipped but if I can we can work out the details when I get them. Seems like these are a little hard to find.

| If you don't want to be bothered cleaning out the marrow go to the pet store and buy one already cleaned. That is all I have given Buddy for three years. I replace them every so often because they never wear out. Thanks for this post. I have been trying to pass the word everytime I read bully sticks, pig ears or rawhide. All are dangerous to your pet. |
