I had a 13 year old Mini Dachshund. Good health, no major problems. It may have been coincidence but we got this product from our Vet who recommended it after they told us they were no longer carrying Advantage, which is what we had used many times before on our dog.

Well, long story short. 3 days after using this product our dog passed away. Pretty horrible experience, maybe not the fault of this product, but it was very coincidental to say the least. One day she was fine, the next she was panting and breathing fast and hard. Took her to a new Vet who said he never heard of Vectra, but "doubted" it was a contributing factor as to her heavy breathing. He "thought" it looked and sounded more like a collapsed trachea. He gave her what a steroid shot, gave me some pills and told me not to start the p-ills unless her condition improved by 8:30 am the next morning and then call him. Well, the next morning at 4 am, she passed away.

End of story and I will never use this product again, regardless.

Rest in peace Sabrina, we will miss you!
sorry to hear that; but i agree; it could be possible due to the nature of the ingredients; they are toxic. my dog was fine, until i starting using advantage tubes; month after month her health starting deteriating; i never put my finger on it; but now looking back i think it's the pestescide that can cause nerve damage and other health problems. so i stopped using it and the heart worm pill altogether; i bathe her once weekly in the summer and every other week in the winter; and when going outside i use the halo herbal dip with water and spray it on her; no flees or ticks or worms so far. good luck

I am surprised to hear that about advantage. My yorkies use it and also recently I had fleas on a 3 week old kitten and a nursing mother and the vet said I could use the cat version on the mother and could put 2 drops on the kitten, I was under the impression you couldnt use flea preventative on nursing mothers or kittens but he said advantagee is safe to use. Neither had any ill effects

i wouldn't use it on kittens and nursing mother; you could try some herbal remedies that have essential oils that repels flees. i know garlic repels fless but not sure how u can apply it; sorry

I think it is really good that you listen to your vet, but I would recommend doing a bit of research as well. My vet original prescribed Revolution which worked great and it is safe for dogs and cats - even puppies and kittens. My vet, who I did trust, just sold me a three pack of Vectra 3D but since Frankie had such a bad reaction, they are saying they will reevaluate whether they prescribe it anymore. That says to me that they did not do THEIR OWN research before giving my dog a treatment. I have found NUMEROUS examples of issues dogs (especially small ones) have had with Vectra 3D. I don't think it would have taken them long to figure that out if they had actually done it.

Either way, no one is saying you shouldn't trust you vet or you did the wrong thing by giving your kittens Advantage... it's just always a safe bet to look things up and ask before giving it to your pet.

Below is a good link that tells you the effects of pesticides (found in most flea/tick/mite medication). The site talks about toxicity to humans and the risks, but I think it can also give us at least a "head up" for our pets. Look up the drug you are thinking of using and find the active ingrediant (Flea Medication: Pyrethrins, Pyrethroids, Fipronil, & Other Flea Medications) then go check it out on this website:

News about new Vectra 3D spot on

This article also made reference to the reason vets are starting to push Vectra - since it's not an over the counter drug and you can't get it online, it's Vet only, they make more money on it... too bad they aren't doing the research on it's side effects!
wow this is sad Money Why i am so skeptical of new vaccines and medications

bumping this now as owner needs help asap on this

Unhappy Scared of vectra 3d

I just gave my 3lb Yorkie her dose of Vectra 3D..almost the whole dose when I realized it smells potent like rubber cement or something. I did some research and after reading about all the sick or dead dogs that had had this product I immediately gave my dog a bath within 20 minutes of application. Now I'm really afraid I just poisoned my poor puppy!!! OMG! Anyone know if you think she will be since I bathed her right away? Would all of it have gotten into her system already...Im kinda freaking out waiting for a reaction now. She once a had a 12 hr reaction to her distemper shot where she was throwing up and very inactive...I'm afraid she may get one this time. Anyone have any good advice??

Angry Terrible side effects with Vectra 3D

My babies had a bad reaction to this product. My boy started walking sideways and with a limp as if he had a wooden leg (back, right leg). My girl was lethargic, kept trying to lick it off and slept more than usual. Neither wanted to eat, drink water or play. They were not behaving normally after I applied the Vectra
I washed them to give them some relieve and took them to the vet. The vet administered a Benedryl shot to both of them and told me to keep an eye on them for 48 hours and if they did not improve to call him.
Well, it didn't improve so I called the vet and took them back to the hospital. The vet told me to give them a bath that evening and another in the morning to wash off the med. I did that and 4 days later, it's getting better but my babies are still not 100%.
I'm going back to Frontline (the better of two evils) Until I figure out how to get my babies off drugs while keeping them safe at the same time (a difficult balancing act) I cringe every time I have to give drugs to my trusting little angels.

Sorry to hear about your baby. Please don’t use any flea repellant; they are all pesticides and can be harmful. Do more research about natural alternative. If your dog doesn’t spend that much time outside no need to use these meds.
Using little garlic can be helpful to repel fleas; or herbal spray with neem or eucalyptis oil; see halo herbal dip.
You can use some antioxidant to detox your dog from the vectra. Vitamin C and E and some milk thistle to detox the liver.
these drugs are horrible and can cause irreversible neurological problems. good luck

I'll follow your advice . Though my babies are by my side most of the time, they do enjoy their independence in the back yard. That's where I'm afraid they'll get a tick or something from the deer, rabbits, etc. that like to visit our yard. If it weren't because of that and our visits to Petsmart and the like, I wouldn't use any of those drugs. But, since I have to, I'll look into a safer alternative. I'm so disapointed to hear the reason why Vectra was recommended to me . Had it killed my babies, I don't know how I would have taken it. I was almost in tears watching them suffer. I just pray there aren't any lasting side effects. I've told them mommy's so sorry, and they kiss me, I feel so guilty . How trusting and sweethearts, they are
