| Is chicken bad for Yorkies? My A.J. is 14 months, and I just inherited him when my aunt passed away (4 weeks ago). He was just under 5 lbs when I got him, but both she and I were concerned about how bony his ribs and rear hips were. She took him to the vet, and he said he was not malnourished (which I kind of find hard to believe. I just don't think he should be /that/ bony, but I am new to dogs. I'm a cat person, basically. Anyway, my Aunt was feeding him according to what her vet suggested, which was kibble, Science Diet, puppy food (tiny bites) I don't particularly want to buy Science Diet, as I have read they do testing on animals. I did buy some, but it was not puppy food (he is over a year, is he still a puppy?), and the bites were too big, but he did eat it. So I got some Nutro Natural Choice small bites, lamb meal and rice formula (goof for skin and coat). He he has been eating it about the same as he did the Science diet. And his poops were nice hard little nuggets. But he doesn't eat while I'm at work. (nor does he seem to go to the bathroom at all). Odd... no? I figure it is due to the fact that he is home alone with my 8 year old siamese... It has been tense at times, but overall they seem to be getting along.... Anyway, back to my question about chicken. In an attempt to put some meat on his bones, last week I decided to start giving him fresh (frozen) chicken. I just cook it, in water, and then mush it all up. He was ecstatic, and the first night he ate a whole chicken breast (boneless and skinless, and about the size of my hand, not a large one). So I gave him more the next and next night. His stool was softer, but still solid. But now, today, after 5 days of chicken at night, apparently the poor baby has diharea(sp?). It got all stuck in his fur. (he didn't like that at all.... it was almost humorous how he stood there and seemed to be asking me to clean his fur for him, which of course I did....) But now I'm concerned if my giving him chicken is not what I should be doing. I am loathe to buy canned dog food, but I really think he needs more than just kibble. Any advice on the chicken scenario from those that know? |

| I know they say give chicken and rice when they have an upset tummy! Someone will give you a better answer, though! Sounds like you are really trying to give him a great new home! Good job, New MOM!!

| Thank you It really has been an ajustment. We are working on getting him to pee outside (I have fenced in my patio and back yard so he has many many many choices OUTSIDE), and I have yelled at him a lot when he gets it wrong. I just have to nip this in the bud. I am amazed at how smart he is. (I always thought little dogs were kind of .. well, not very smart). I have taught him to sit, stay, up, down... and he got it right away. I was impressed. He is adorable, he loves to play with his toys (I have decided to take away his stuffed animals because all he does is hump them, and I want to discourage that behaviour because he has started doing it to visitors and kids) I have to be careful and divide my affection between the cat and the dog. I notice that they are definitely jealous of each other and both kind of act up if I don't give each their due (but not more) |

| When my yorkie was having diarrhea when he was a pup due to worms and then later on from worm medication, I fed him boiled chicken and rice and it didn't work after a few days so my vet said to stop doing it. I then remember I did gave him some pure canned pumpkin (must be pure), some yogurt to stabilize his tummy. The yogurt has good bacteria to help his tummy. Don't remember exactly what the canned pumpkin does though. Not sure if sharing this will help in your situation. I hope your pup will be okay soon.

| Chicken lover Think boiled chicken is fine when you know he really needs to eat. I gave in too much and had to get him back on quality dry, mixed with Science Diet a/d for poor eaters. Yorkies are special and will love to please you. Give him time to adjust to new rules and surrondings Not sure of age, weight , I will add more when I review your posts. I do keep Nutri-Cal for a boost to keep blood suger at normal level if he gets pickie about eating.

YT 500 Club Member | I am wondering if he just didn't eat too much chicken. It is not bad for them, (it is good, actually) but maybe he has just eaten too much. You may want to cut back just a little and give him the chicken along with the food in the normal amount suggested. If you give him the full amount of food plus the chicken, his little tummy may just not be able to handle it. Oh, and pumpkin is to get a dog to go, loosen the stool. I would be careful with pumpkin if tummy is upset. You are a good candidate for a Yorkie. I have always been a cat person, but Yorkies seem to have a lot of cat qualities. (Please don't jump on me for those of you who may not agree). One especially is that mine always looks at me like "If I come to you, what is in it for me?" Best of luck with your new baby. You are a wonderful person to do this.

| Chicken is fine for them as long as they aren't allergic. Are you sure the chicken caused the diarrhea? Are you sure you aren't giving too much? Chicken does have some calories but you have to feed more chicken than some other foods to get the same amount of calories. Steel cut oats put weight on Ellie but that would only work if you want to give carbs. I also don't like Nutro. There has been some negative press about it lately, so I wouldn't use it.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | WELCOME!! Your new baby is extremely adorable! I am sorry for your recent loss - I'm sure you both miss her. Chicken is fine for some (many, even), but just keep in mind that it is generally the most highly allergenic meat there is (to dogs) - so keep an eye on it. Your pup may have a sensitivity if given too much of it - so you could try both less per meal, as well as less times per week. A very, very easily digested protein you could give is white fish (pollock, cod, sole, tilapia, whiting, trout etc) - you could toss that in w/ the kibble. Fish is super easy on their systems - so that may be an option if A.J. continues to have issues. Canned/mashed potatos are loved by most dogs - that would probably be a great treat for him too at meal times.

| Well if you were feeding exclusively chicken for 5 days straight then no wonder he is having watery stools. He has to have things other than chicken...i dont homecook so im not real good with this but im pretty sure just feeding a protein is bad, you need to mix other stuff in like veggies and they have supplemental powders you can add that give them the nutrients that the chicken and veggies wont. I think chicken alone is probably your problem. They need some fiber in their diet. |
