My A.J. is 14 months, and I just inherited him when my aunt passed away (4 weeks ago). He was just under 5 lbs when I got him, but both she and I were concerned about how bony his ribs and rear hips were. She took him to the vet, and he said he was not malnourished (which I kind of find hard to believe. I just don't think he should be /that/ bony, but I am new to dogs. I'm a cat person, basically.
Anyway, my Aunt was feeding him according to what her vet suggested, which was kibble, Science Diet, puppy food (tiny bites)
I don't particularly want to buy Science Diet, as I have read they do testing on animals. I did buy some, but it was not puppy food (he is over a year, is he still a puppy?), and the bites were too big, but he did eat it.
So I got some Nutro Natural Choice small bites, lamb meal and rice formula (goof for skin and coat). He he has been eating it about the same as he did the Science diet. And his poops were nice hard little nuggets.
But he doesn't eat while I'm at work. (nor does he seem to go to the bathroom at all). Odd... no? I figure it is due to the fact that he is home alone with my 8 year old siamese... It has been tense at times, but overall they seem to be getting along....
Anyway, back to my question about chicken. In an attempt to put some meat on his bones, last week I decided to start giving him fresh (frozen) chicken. I just cook it, in water, and then mush it all up.
He was ecstatic, and the first night he ate a whole chicken breast (boneless and skinless, and about the size of my hand, not a large one).
So I gave him more the next and next night. His stool was softer, but still solid.
But now, today, after 5 days of chicken at night, apparently the poor baby has diharea(sp?). It got all stuck in his fur. (he didn't like that at all.... it was almost humorous how he stood there and seemed to be asking me to clean his fur for him, which of course I did....)
But now I'm concerned if my giving him chicken is not what I should be doing. I am loathe to buy canned dog food, but I really think he needs more than just kibble.
Any advice on the chicken scenario from those that know?
