| All of a sudden scabs!! Hi, This is my first post and I sure hope someone can help. I have an almost 2 year old male Yorkie. All of a sudden he has dry scabs all over his shoulders and down his sides somewhat. He has never even had dry skin in the past!! He has had this for 3 days now. I feed him Life Abundance Kibble and he eats the Barf Lamb and Barf Beef Raw Patties. All treats are natural and or homemade. He like Sam's Yams as well. Please Help! Cyndee |

| Thank Patty, No it's not ring worm. It's more like tiny pen head size scabs maybe just a bit larger. Almost like what you might see from a flea bite but it's not that either. I'm afraid it's something much worse. Herbie is Terrified of the vets office so I'm going to call a vet that makes house visits but I'm not sure how soon I can get them out here. Oh and it's not bothering him either. He's not scratching or anything!! |

| Marty, another little Yorkie here is having some skin problems too. Here is a link to his post (which includes another link to an earlier post). I don't think it sounds like the same thing, but a lot of people gave opinions. I thought there might be something there that might be a clue you could ask your vet about. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=114384

| Thanks again, I am a retired groomer and from what I know it doesn't look like mange. Very wierd! That is for sure!! I know our dogs are now suffering from many diseases we humans get and I can go on and on about why I think so but that's not going to help my guy. This was just so sudden ! One day fine and the next Boom!! Flaky scabs!! I'm sure I'm going to have to have the vet check him. I'm opposed to so many meds that I think I will try to get a hold of the Holistic vet in San Diego. |

| My Alyssa has little scabs, too. About 2 weeks ago my Alyssa started scratching and biting her skin. This went on for a few days. Finally I could stand it no more. I felt like such a bad mommy. I called the vet who of course wanted me to bring her in. I have done that before and he ends up putting her on steroids. I really prefer she not be on steroids. I called my groomer and told her what we were experiencing. I put on my strong reading glasses and turned her upside down in search of fleas. I could find no fleas. She had white flaky skin and little black things all over her fur and her stomach. She had chewed on her fur so much that it was coming off at her tail. I took her to the groomer and paid all of this extra money for a better quality of shampoo/conditioner with oatmeal, a special treatment for fleas, etc. I even had her teeth brushed as part of the deal. They cut her fur fairly short but saw no evidence of fleas. They did give her a flea treatment. They asked me how often I bathe her...no more often than every 2 weeks. I told them I had used Dawn soap detergent the last time and then her regular shampoo. When she came home she was not scratching so much. Two days later I turned her over to check her stomach. There were little black things again like scabs that were attached to her body. I could not pull them off without hurting her. Her stomach was also starting to flake again. The only thing I could think of was maybe she was getting something in the treats she got. I totally took her off treats except for Yorkie Yummies. I also used Healthy PetNet Soothing Mist with Aloe Vera and Lavender. I spray her with this 3 to 4 times a day. She is still itching but not as badly as she was. I beginning to think she may have some problems with the heat system or perhaps the treats she was eating. She is better but we still have problems. I would love to know what is going on with her. I want to know why she is still scratching and why she has the scabs. Anyone with helpful information???

My little Shadow Donating YT Member | Itching too with scabs I know exactly how you feel! I am also new here and I had to share our misery so that maybe we can make sense of all this? My baby girl was only 8.5 months old when all the problems started. She started the itching, scratching, biting, and absolutely could not rest. She then had just a couple of scabby spots on her shoulder. I thought maybe her collar was rubbing, so I took it off. At first, of course I thought maybe it could be fleas, but she is on Frontline and I never saw any fleas. I even tried giving her Capstar a couple of times which is suppose to kill any fleas on her within a few hours. I bathed her in flea shampoo with oatmeal. I called the Vet and discussed, but finally made an appt. Our Vet is always so very helpful and she agreed that she didn't see any fleas either. I was dreading the talk of Steroid Shot because I had that experience before with a beloved pet who had Yeast Skin Infection and was praying not to go down that road again. Well, she said Bella was too young for Steroid. RELIEVED! She wanted to know our bathing routine for Bella. She explained that sometimes "we humans" bathe our furry babies in water temperature that we think we like which is way too hot for them! The water should be cool, she said. The warmer water dries out their skin. I also blow dry her which I shouldn't do. She suggested Fish Oil on her food once a day which I am now doing, plus she is on an antibiotic for the skin scabbies. I also spray her with Hydrocortisone spray with Aloe. Benadryl - well it doesn't seem to do much for my baby. The liquid Benadryl makes her throw up. So tablets are better for her. We are still struggling - Bella because she is miserably discomforted and Me because I feel like I'm letting her down. I also wanted to add that during all this she developed tear stains which was strange? Poor Baby also is going through her first Heat cycle. She will curl up with me and I will put my arms around her to make it stop, but soon she has to find a new spot and proceed with itching. I am trying all that I can. Please help.................she is such a sweet baby. It's been a few weeks now and hope she gets better soon! |

| Maybe It's Related Maybe the itching is related to her heat cycle. Johnny's itching and scab-like spots on the upper areas of his front legs stopped when I took him to the vet and got meds. I'm not too hopeful that this will go away after the meds stop as I've read dog allergies don't get better as the dog grows. He's on the doggie version of prednisone, not itching/biting, and the ugly scabs went away too. He also had a bit of an infection from the itching/biting so get that checked out. I also asked the vet about possibility of food allergy and he said that determining that becomes a major undertaking. Good luck with solving the problem.

My little Shadow Donating YT Member | Itching too with scabs I wanted to add that the Vet told me the Flea shampoo was drying out her skin. So I stopped that and only use the Oatmeal shampoo. I'm trying to bathe her less often. I really think it's allergies since the tear staining began simultaneously. |

My little Shadow Donating YT Member | Hi Cyndee, I was wondering if your baby is also on Frontline? I've been reading other posts referring to reactions with it. It's curious that the couple of scabs appeared in the shoulder area for my little girl where I administer the Frontline. Yours is similiar. I feel like a detective, but the only way I know to figure all this out is to find the similiarities. Thanks!

| Yes I agree - dry air, poor cleaning of the house, allergies - but also the Products you use for bathing can really damage the skin over time. Also if you bath too often, use a conditioner, and don't wash them thoroughly. Check you stuff - Check the label if it has Sodium Laureth Sulfaten (SLS) I I found out the hard way with Roxy. She began having dry flakey skin, then tremendous scratching all the time. I went through a few shampoos and settled on a Medicated Ones for skin issues. Well...totaly made her worse and she started to develop staph infections (pimple with puss that would grow, then dry up, flake off and leave a blackish spot on her skin). This has been going on for almost 1 year. After doing some research, I do believe it is the following ingredient that is the cause. Please check your labels, this stuff is in everything, if your baby has sensitive skin or skin issues, please research and find a product that is free of SLS: Sodium Laureth Sulfate Products containing these substances can affect those prone to eczema and other irritants. These substances provide a foaming quality to the product, allowing for better distribution of the product while washing hair or skin and while brushing teeth. When rinsed off, the product will have cleaned the area but will have taken moisture from the top layers of skin. In people with sensitive skin (prone to dermatitis, acne, eczema, psoriasis and chemical sensitivity), the drying property of these type of detergents can cause flare-ups of skin conditions or may worsen existing conditions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_laureth_sulfate Roxy gats bathed 2 to 3 weeks with Minksheen and NO CONDITIONER - I rinse her with water for at least 5 mins or more, making sure no reside is left. On her problem areas, I apply Skin Works cream, by the Coat Handler, is it the only thing that coats her skin well enough to heal. |
