Crystal Tag Microchips I will have to take Jambo in to get neutered as we near his 6 month old birthday. After asking everyone's opinion here I have decided to also get him microchipped. I asked the vet's office what kind of micro chip they inserted and they said Crystal Tags. Anyone know anything about it? I have seen on other threads Homeagain and AVID but not sure about this one.

My two new pups have Home Again; my older dogs all have Avid. I've never heard of Crystal Tag, and a google doesn't come up with very much. Chipping isn't that big a deal; neither of the pups even flinched when they were implanted. However, it becomes a big deal if you think your pet is protected, but it's with an "off brand" that no one can read should the necessity arise. All the chips have "readers"; most of the new readers will pick up on several different kinds of chips. But if the chip isn't a commonly recognized one, it won't be read, which is tantamount to not having one. I'm a techno nut; I like to be on the cutting edge of many things. But other things, the "tried and true" can't be beat. There's a lot to be said for "common" things.

These are the things I found on the internet which doesn't tell me too much. http://www.crystaltag.com/pages/faq1.htm http://www.classypets.com/Merchant5/..._Code=PTSCHIPS I guess the Crystal Tag is at a 134 khz frequency whereas most US Tags are 128/125khz. I have my baby's neutering scheduled for next week and I wanted to get him microchipped during this time. His vet only uses Crystal Tags and I don't want to get him something that is useless in which case I will need to take him to another vet since I want to take care of both procedures at the same time. I take him to a great vet but oh what to do!

Check your "Big Box" pet stores; a lot of them have vets on call on weekends who will do it for substantially less than your regular vet. There is no reason to do both neutering and chipping at the same time, unless it's just to save the cost of a vet visit. The chip implantation is like getting a shot ... nothing more. It will hurt you more than him ... so don't look .
