Thanks for the tip! I hate fish so that might discourage me from using it.

I have heard good things about Petzlife (I have some here and don't use it), but then it doesn't work for some. There is also the question of whether or not you want to give your dog grain alcohol and grape seed extract everyday (of course toothpaste ingredients are probably worse). Petzlife has no reported side effects though. It is worth a try but I like toothpaste.

I asked Mocha's age because at 18 months it is no longer a puppy teeth problem so much as a buildup problem and they probably should be professionally cleaned. I never had Ellie's teeth cleaned and she developed stage 3-4 periodontal disease. Her front teeth were falling out and she had to have nine pulled. So at the first sign of needing a cleaning, please consider it.

The above is what I use on my 2. We were using Petzlife gel & spray but my kids weren't real crazy about them. I used to wipe the gel on with the edge of a wet face cloth during bath time and the spray during the week. They hate the sound of the spray! And gagged after the gel. The main thing is the brushing - you could even just use water from what my vet said. Another thing - the front teeth are what's important. For some reason they don't get too many problems with the back teeth.

Great thread, this is all good to know. Both of mine have tartar and the vet has already said that they will need dental at their next checkup. I do brush, but have not kept up. I used Petlize on Hot Rod a couple of times and he was not a fan so I let it go by the wayside. I really need to get back on it.

well since they just had dentals yes but i wipe down their teeth every night before bed now to stay on top of it. I used petzlife gel on my maltese for a year and she lost 27 teeth due to periodontal disease at 4 years old so lost faith in that product and i was very religious about it and i took her to a board certified dentist too My yorkie girl at 5 only lost 5 teeth so my maltese was real bad

Awww, 27 teeth seems like a lot. I know your Maltese is grateful though that you care enough to try so hard. I just ordered Petzlife & then found this thread...we'll see I guess.

I've seen dog toothpaste with baking soda already in it. I think it was in a Drs. Foster and Smith's catalog. I haven't tried it.

Hi, I haven't been around for awhile! Well, I never did buy any Royal Canin. lol
I had just read that lots of doggies really loved it and at that time...my baby yorkie didn't like the food I was feeding her. Now I just switch around and use different (recommended) kinds and she's happy.

I tried to brush my yorkies teeth and she through a fit. This was not going to happen. It's good to know there are other ways to clean her teeth. Will spaying be enough or must I use a swab too?
