brushing teeth with baking soda Silly question... Mocha has a tartar and bad breath problem, really bad breath. Is it alright to use a little bit of baking soda on her tooth brush? The breeder that I bought her from suggested it, and as much as I trust her I just never heard of it before. I know my daughter uses baking soda once a week to keep her mouth (and braces) fresh. I am using toothpaste for dog but really it doesn't seem to be doing much. Any suggestions? |

I can't remember the site I was on but I just came across this very subject and it stated not to use baking soda because of the sodium content.... That was just the one site I saw this in, maybe someone else can elaborate more on this subject because I wondered the same thing..... |

 How old is Mocha? |

Why bother taking a change when you can use Petzlife. It's the best for removing tartar and keeping your pup's teeth white.:D Also brushing daily is very important. |

Mocha is 18 months and weighs 3lbs 1ou. I thought baking soda didn't sound right. She's not a fan of the toothbrush so I've been using Dental Pet Swabs. She doesn't mind those but they are not cutting it at all. I've tried different chew toys but she's really not interested in chewing. I will check out Petzlife. |

I have heard good things about Petzlife (I have some here and don't use it), but then it doesn't work for some. There is also the question of whether or not you want to give your dog grain alcohol and grape seed extract everyday (of course toothpaste ingredients are probably worse). Petzlife has no reported side effects though. It is worth a try but I like toothpaste. I asked Mocha's age because at 18 months it is no longer a puppy teeth problem so much as a buildup problem and they probably should be professionally cleaned. I never had Ellie's teeth cleaned and she developed stage 3-4 periodontal disease. Her front teeth were falling out and she had to have nine pulled. So at the first sign of needing a cleaning, please consider it.:) |

What so many do not understand is that it is very important to BRUSH every singel day! A Yorkshire Terrier is known to loose it's teeth at an early age if not properly cared for. It was in every single book I read before getting Buddy. I never thought about brusing a dog's teeth before getting him! I will say there are very few days that his teeth did not get brused and I have been using Petzlife 2x a week. He was just four and his teeth are brite white and there is no tartar anywhere. So is does work. You can't expect miracles on teeth if they have not been cared for in the past but petzlife will help with tartar build up if used as stated on the package. We brush our teeth daily so why not our pet's. It pays in the long run, really. |

I have already spent $765 on Ellie's dentistry alone. |

I'm so glad I found this thread! One of my Yorkies, Greta, has some type of allergic reaction to Baking Soda. Every time I've used it to brush her teeth, she gets ill and has really bad gas. At first it didn't dawn on me, that it could be baking soda, doing this to her. Question: What is the best thing to use on their teeth? I use doggie toothpaste now and a kids toothbrush, but it's just SO hard to get the back teeth! What do all of you use? :-) |

Goodness, I'm sorry! I found another thread with all the info I needed. Going to get some Royal Canin and Petzlife spray. :-D Thanks! Emmy |

I use Petzlife on Maddie and Libby and am very happy with the product. They didn't have an tarter when I started and still don't. After my Mom died, I didn't function well, and kept forgetting to spray Maddie's teeth. One day I noticed tarter, just from not using the Petzlife. I made sure I sprayed each day and her tarter is all gone again and the Petzlife seems to keep it that way. I know some have been disappointed, but I'm sold on the stuff and will use it always. |

My favorite is CET toothpaste. Why Royal Canin? That food has made several Yorkies very itchy. |

Just wanted to "bump" a good thread. |

For those of you that use petzlife, do you use the gel or the spray? Or does it really matter? |

I use the gel to brush and the spray afterward. |
