| What is the normal shot schedule for puppies.. Is it one shot every 3-4 weeks until they have had 3 shots or 4 shots? I know that Gracie had her 1st shots at her breeders and then she has had 2 since she has been with me and I think she is supposed to go back next week for another one. She really has a hard time with her shots and if she doesn't need this other one I don't want her to have it...any suggestions? |

| I usually say three sets if they start at 8 weeks or 4 sets if they start at 6 weeks. I would not start earlier than 8 weeks... It will be hard talking your vet out of what they want to do though.

| Thanks. She was 8 weeks old when she started. I don't want her to have another one, but I am sure the vet thinks so. They also want to have a parvo booster every 6 months and I didn't want them to have that either since they are rarely out of my yard, but they say they are not up to date if they don't have a parvo booster every 6 months. What do you think about that? Does anyone elses vet say a parvo booster every 6 months? |

I think if you can't talk them out of that you need to find a new vet. Ask them for scientific studies to back that one up from a major university. I would do puppies shots and then the first year booster. After that I would vaccinate every three years and/or do titers. What are all the shots they are giving anyway?

| I refused Lepto for Chloe because Zoey had a reaction. I will never get Berdetella again because Chloe contracted Kennel cough from the vaccine. I am only getting rabies and parvo from this point on. I am unsure of the booster schedule for these. Does anyone know what the bare minimum booster schedule is for parvo and rabies? I dont want any we dont need!

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | are you going to banfield? if she got her first vaccine at 8 weeks then she should have gotten the following 2 at 12 and 16 weeks. No more after that. rabies can be done any time after that. i'd wait a month at least. i did morgan's at 6 months with her spay/teeth extractions/microchiping. she should not be getting a parvo booster every 6 months. that is just unnecessary. over vaccinating is just as big a problem as under vaccinating. if your current vet insists on giving them then i would fine a new vet.

Parvo puppy shots are necessary and then the one year booster. After that it is between you and your vet. Some vets insist on giving them every year which is way too much. Others give them every three years which is fair. Others still do titers which I prefer. Then there are combinations of all of these. It is whatever you and your vet decide on. The earliest I would want to give rabies is six months but some states say four months. I think I would keep my dog inside til 6 months and still do it then. Some vets will work with you on that.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | ah i heard banfield does things like that, that's why i asked. i'd have a talk with your vet and tell them you won't want unnecessary things. you only really need a distemper combo every year and a rabies vaccine every 3 years. the lepto and corona are a no no. bordatella isn't needed unless they are around other dogs alot like at day care. lyme isn't needed either. as for the spay, it shouldn't matter how big they are. small ones are actually easier to do because once they make the incision everything is basically right there LOL if your vet is good they should have no problem spaying at 6 months no matter what the weight.

| I use a holistic vet and he recommends the first shots at around 10 to 12 weeks (distemper and parvo only) and the second set 4 weeks later. He says that should protect them the rest of their life but to be sure I think you could get a titer test done once year to be sure they are still immunized. I would put of the rabies shot as long a possible. For kennel cough the vet gave me some little tiny homeopathic pellets, I don't know what they are called but I feel they are really safe. The main thing is to not let your vet over vaccinate. If you have a tiny Yorkie then I would definitely wait until at least 10 weeks. Another thing I recommend is to have blood work before the 1st shots if possible. Just a regular blood panel might show if anything is going on with the liver. If you have the blood work done within a 4 weeks after the shot you can get a false reading. |
