| Pancreatitis warning My 5 year old yorkie, Daisy, is recovering from a serious pancreatitis episode, and the vet attributes it to a bowl of catfood. We were visiting relatives and before I could stop her, she had eaten the entire bowl. Three days later, she was very, very ill: vomiting, dehydrating, lethargic. The vet said that catfood is very high in fat and protein. Daisy never eats table food, so the catfood is the only thing we can point to as the cause of this terrible illness. Now, after 2 days of IV's, two weeks of antibiotics and anti-nausea meds, and a special diet, she is better. The vet said that yorkies (and schnauzers) should be monitored carefully for pancreatitis and allowed only very small amounts (if any) high fat food (pork...and catfood, too!) As much as dogs seem to love peanut butter, it is now on my forbidden list! Daisy is a big girl...she weighs about 9 1/2 lbs. If she had been smaller, this pancreatitis would have killed her. Forever after, I will only allow low fat food and low fat treats to be given to my precious Daisy and Barnie. And I will never allow them to be near catfood! Just wanted to warn everyone! Daisy and Barnie's mom, Janet |

| Janet, I am so sorry about Daisy! I know what you are going through. Zeus went through this a few months ago and it was just heartbreaking. He was at the vet all day and was on antibiotics and other meds. It was just terrible and they think his was caused by peanut butter. Peanut butter is very high in fat also. Before the vet diagnosed him with this, I had never heard of it in dogs, but it is very painful for the little ones. I hope Daisy is feeling much better.

| This is where I would disagree with your vet. I would NEVER give any pork or peanut butter to a toy dog. Their pancreas cannot handle it. They are not made like humans and, therefore, I would advise people to not give it to their babies. Even small amounts are not worth the risk of a lifetime illness... I hope your baby recovers. |

| Thank you all for your concern. I did not know that this disease was a problem for our precious little doggies, and I would not want any little ones out there to suffer like my baby did. Heather, I hope little Zeus is doing better now. Again, thank you all for caring. It's up to us to protect our little ones! Daisy and Barnie's mom, Janet |

| Pancreatitis is the number reason for not feeding table scraps or people food of any type. I moved my cat's food up on a counter in the laudry room when my yorkies showed a desire to eat it. I am so glad Daisy is going to be okay. Thanks for reminding us again why we are such "meanies" when it comes to no ice cream or people food!! |

| Im glad she is okay. Coonsies got pancreatitis after getting neutered and getting a bunch of his baby teeth pulled in the same day. We switched to the soft/wet puppy food to ease his mouth. I guess switching their diet like that isn't good for them. Anyways he threw up atleast 25 times that night at home and at the hospital. He had to stay overnight with IV's in his arm He's perfectly fine now. Energetic and healthy. Don't worry your little guy will pull through |

| Going through the same thing with Sedrick right now. Friday night our friends were puppysitting and decided he liked Bologna and french fries!! Big mistake. We ended up at his reg vet Saturday afternoon due to vomiting and lethargy and then to the emergency vet Sunday morning at 4 am again because of severe and I mean severe vomiting and dehydration and was given a shot of anti vomiting and liquid antacids. He spent all day Monday hooked up to IV and went home with us last night with his IV intact. One of the immediate instructions for pancreatitis was to stop all food intake for 24 hours so as to allow pancreas time to "heal" A good website we found was www.veterinarypetcare.com/dogpancreatitis.html Last night he was finally able to keep 1 teaspoon of Low residue diet down and now this morning again able to keep food down. Hopefully we are on the road to recovery and a strict diet will now be followed by all of Sedrick's Puppysitters |

| More helpful information - thanks-a-bunch! I didn't realize that cat food was so full of fat, and that they should stay away from high fat foods. Good thing I haven't given Deegan anything full of fat. Thanks for the heads up. I hope your baby fully recovers quickly.
