Exclamation Pancreatitis warning

My 5 year old yorkie, Daisy, is recovering from a serious pancreatitis episode, and the vet attributes it to a bowl of catfood. We were visiting relatives and before I could stop her, she had eaten the entire bowl. Three days later, she was very, very ill: vomiting, dehydrating, lethargic. The vet said that catfood is very high in fat and protein. Daisy never eats table food, so the catfood is the only thing we can point to as the cause of this terrible illness.

Now, after 2 days of IV's, two weeks of antibiotics and anti-nausea meds, and a special diet, she is better. The vet said that yorkies (and schnauzers) should be monitored carefully for pancreatitis and allowed only very small amounts (if any) high fat food (pork...and catfood, too!) As much as dogs seem to love peanut butter, it is now on my forbidden list!

Daisy is a big girl...she weighs about 9 1/2 lbs. If she had been smaller, this pancreatitis would have killed her. Forever after, I will only allow low fat food and low fat treats to be given to my precious Daisy and Barnie. And I will never allow them to be near catfood!

Just wanted to warn everyone!

Daisy and Barnie's mom,
Janet
