Diabetes Hi, can anyone tell me if such a thing exsists and if I can buy one. What is she on about your all saying.... is there such a thing as a urine or blood test kit for dogs to test for Diabetes that can be done at home and if there is where can I get one? I just thought I'd ask as these things can be bought for humans so why not dogs? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks Lisa Mitchell

It's very important for you to monitor how your dog responds to the injected insulin dosage. You do that by testing the urine with test strips usually available at drug stores or pet shops. The test strip will tell you how much sugar is present in the dog's system, and you may have to adjust the dosage of insulin based on the results. Have your vet teach you how to use the test kits, what results to look for, and when to administer higher or lower dosages. Keep a record of the test strips results, amount of insulin given, and your dog's eating behaviors and attitude. This will not only help you understand the dog's condition, but will help your vet if other problems arise. http://www.pgaa.com/canine/health/diabetes.html

diabetes? Sorry, it's my fault I haven't made our situation very clear. Living in London, England it's extremely expensive to visit a veterinary surgery these days. Because vets charge so much over here alot of pet owners are not getting new pets when the old ones pass on and so vets are making money in other ways it would appear, like promoting certain brands of pet food and pet insurers etc which really sucks as they should all be neutral to those opinions. As it stands, when I take my dog for a check up these days, he gets everything done to him whether he needs it or not and it's SO obvious to us that the vet is just making his money one way or another. So the reason I asked whether I could get hold of the "test strips" was to save my dog the visits to the vets he doesn't need. For all I know he doesn't have Diabetes and has never been diagnosed as having it but I wanted to give him a test as he is getting older,it seems easy enough. If I took him along to the vet for a test he would be taken in for the day and subjected to an assortment of tests he probably doesn't need. For example, he got a mild eye infection which the vet insisted on a swab sample being sent away and then another before agreeing that the ointment he first prescribed would do the job. I had four consultations aswell so it all adds up. I hear this all the time from people I know. This is why I enquired about testing his urine.

diabetes To Mitchell: I have recently discovered that my dog has diabetes. I started to notice signs like constant thurst and frequest urination. This was so excessive that you will notice that something isn't right. I took Kahlie to the vet to have her yearly shots and grooming and I requested that they check her urine because I thought that she had a UTI. The vet called and told me that suger showed up in her urine and wanted to get my permission to do further blood work. I said that was fine because we needed to know her suger level readings. Her suger was 450!! I couldn't believe it I am now giving her two insulin shots twice daily. We are in the progress to determine how much is right for her. She takes 7 units a day at this point although this may change. I was like you at first thinking what if they were wrong. I have the test strips here at home that check the level of K-tones in the urine. I was once again shocked to see that hers actually did. So now I am keeping a log and write down what the levels are before her injections and 2 hours after the injections. I also write down how much she eats so I will have something to report to Kahlie's vet when she goes back this Friday. Keep your fingers crossed and say a prayer that she is much better.
