| Thinking of switching to raw.... I'm thinking of switching Zoe to a raw diet. She is just such a picky eater and I think she is underweight and I've heard such good things about the raw diet. Anyways, I have a few questions for those of you feeding raw diets ... 1. which premade raw would you recommend? 2. How expensive do you find it to be? 3. How many medallions do you feed per feeding and how many times a day do you feed? 4. does your dog seem to like it more than kibble? 5. How long can you leave it in their dish if they don't eat it right away? Any advice is appreciated! |

2. It is vary, depends on the meat. Can be from $12-15 per 3lbs bag. Chloe (6.4 lbs) eats 2 bags per months. Check out this coupon. http://www.naturesvariety.com/tryit/index2.lasso 3. I feed 3 medallions per day, twice a day. Here is a calculator of amount to feed. The amount is depends on your pup's weight and activity level. http://www.naturesvariety.com/ifc.la...29A3JKk40461CC 4. YES!!!!!!!!!!! She LOVES it much better than kibble! 5. Chloe eats them right-a-way! But if your pup doesn't eat it within 20 min or so..I would say either put back in the fridge or toss it. But I highly doubt it would be the case! They normally eat them right-a-way! Last edited by mminichan; 12-26-2007 at 12:22 PM. | |

| I feed mine Nature's Variety. I alternate both raw & dry with canned. Angel doesn't really like the raw that much, she pefers her food warm. Bailey loves it, She is 5 lbs and I would feed her 3-4 medallions a day. I would crumble them up a bit and put them in their bowl and they would gobble them up right on the spot. A bag of frozen beef medallions costs me about $12.00 a bag. The dry kibble (grain free) is $15.00 a bag The canned is about $3.00 a can.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | 1. which premade raw would you recommend? I use NV's medallions - lamb, venison, or rabbit 2. How expensive do you find it to be? I think I spend around $30 - 35 a month for 2 dogs 3. How many medallions do you feed per feeding and how many times a day do you feed? I feed 2x per day. Wylie gets 2 each meal, Marcel gets 1 each meal. 4. does your dog seem to like it more than kibble? LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE it. 5. How long can you leave it in their dish if they don't eat it right away? Wylie inhales it. Marcel eats it in under a minute. They are thriving on it! Fur is gorgeous, less matting (weird, huh?); teeth are cleaner, odorless breath, no doggy smell, tiny teensy poos that almost turn to powder, non-smelly poos.

| 1. which premade raw would you recommend? I've only used Nature's Variety. I normally feed venison and rabbit, but we've tried them all and I'll occasionally feed one of the others. 2. How expensive do you find it to be? Rabbit is about $15 a bag (3lbs - 48medallions), Venison is about $13 a bag. Turkey/Chicken is the cheapest at a little over $10 a bag. 3. How many medallions do you feed per feeding and how many times a day do you feed? I feed Lacy (7.5lbs & moderately active) 4 medallions a day. She gets two in the morning and 2 in the evening. 4. does your dog seem to like it more than kibble? YES YES YES!!! When I fed her kibble, I'd put it in her bowl in the morning and she sometimes wouldn't touch it until the evening. She was never excited about eating. Now she waits at my feet while I'm getting her food ready and she gobbles it up as soon as I set it down. 5. How long can you leave it in their dish if they don't eat it right away? I've seen about 30 minutes. Lacy always gobbles hers up. The only time she ever doesn't eat is if she has an upset tummy.

| I use the freeze-dried raw by The Honest Kitchen. I selected this because you hydrate as needed and there is no need for refrigeration/freezing unless refrigerating an uneaten portion of hydrated food. It isw very easy to travel with and as you hydrate with warm water, the food is warm for those pickier eaters!!! 1. which premade raw would you recommend? See above - protein content is lower than many raw diets to help prevent disorders that come with high protein diets. Varieties without grain available. 2. How expensive do you find it to be? I buy the 10 lb bag which lasts me 4 months for two dogs at a cost of $70.00 - so just under $10/month per pup 3. How many medallions do you feed per feeding and how many times a day do you feed? I feed this for dinner. Breakfast is yogurt. But, if I run out of yogurt, I can quickly substitute this as well. 4. does your dog seem to like it more than kibble? Yes - they gobble it up immediately!! 5. How long can you leave it in their dish if they don't eat it right away? After about 20 minutes you would need to refrigerate any uneaten. You can microwave for a few seconds if needed later.

| Ok you guys are great! I found that we have a store pretty close that sells Natures Variety. Thanks mminichan for the coupon. Wylie's Mom it sounds like you've had great results and I would be happy if Zoe would just eat this but the rest would be wonderful. And LuvMySissy where do you get the Honest Kitchen from? Thanks again everyone! |

| ok, I have another question. I've heard the raw diet is especially good for their teeth but since this is pre made and already ground up, is it still good for their teeth or should I be giving her a chicken drumstick or something similar now and then for her teeth? |

| i just buy bulk chicken thighs, turkey necks, pork or beef neck bones, pigs feet, chicken wings (for the yorkies), and what ever else i can find. tripe, brains tongue on occasion, just cut up the meat small enough for the yorkies to bit, chew and swallow. occasionaly i will throw a raw egg w/shell, and add olive oil on their kibble. try chicken feet for treats. |

| For those of you who feed Nature's Variety, do you feed the Raw Frozen Diet or the Freeze Dried Raw? |

| I feed the raw frozen diet. I've never tried the freeze dried but I'll probably be buying some to take to the YT meetup this summer since there aren't any refrigerators in the rooms

| Ok! I'm doing it! I'm going today to get it but is it best to just go cold turkey? I heard that it takes longer to digest the kibble than raw so I assume it would be a no no to mix it? MyFairLacy you seem really up on all this. Can you give me some good advice?? Thanks! Theresa |
