| 6 month old female in heat; unneutered dad in house I have a male yorkie that I did not have fixed and also have one of his daughters. I made an appointment to have her spayed in 2 weeks (she just turned 6 months old) but today she went into heat. Can anyone give me any suggestions about what to look for, things to do to discourage mating, etc? Should I call the vet and try to get her in earlier? My male has noticed her heat but has not seemed overly interested in trying to mate with her. I'm at a loss as to what to do. Anyone have this situation or do any of you breeders have any suggestions for me? Thanks a lot and Happy Thanksgiving!

| I'm not too sure as I'm not a breeder, but I'd keep them away from each other completely maybe in seperate rooms but definitely crated seperately. |

| I would take turns putting them in a crate. Never let them be together at all! Call the Vet. and tell him about her heat. I'm not sure if they like spaying during a heat cycle, so maybe the first two or three days of heat wouldn't be a problem. Just be sure they are NEVER together. |

| problem The only thing that discourages mating , is to have them totally separated for 3 weeks...if they are allowed to use the same area for pottying, the male will soon pick up on the fact there is a bitch in season close by and he may be a pain in the neck..be careful. |

| I would agree with the other replies. Also, I have had a friend who would put tiny panties on her female (cut a hole for the tail) as a precaution to catch any drips from her heat cycle-maybe this would help keep the male from her. Charlene |

| you would be surprised at how fast these little guys can get those panties off. belly Bands are no good for this either. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali was spayed during her first heat due to other complications requiring her to be put under and she did ok, so I would call the vet asap.

| I really appreciate all of your suggestions. We went to Walmart and got some newborn diapers and I have one of those on her right now until I can come up with plan B. For now, this solution seems to be ok. Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions. I'm calling the vet in the morning and asking for an earlier spay appointment.

| Those diapers will come off if they want them off..there would be no stopping them if let out at the same time..suggestion only...have a friend take one for the full three weeks if you cannot keep one crated at all times...I have done that if I was in a situation that I needed to do so..going away with dogs for a wedding, and driving in the truck with fifth wheel...no way could we have our stud and a female in season...good luck.. |

| Crate them away from each other in seperate rooms. don't even put the crates in the same room next to each other. you'd be amazed what dogs can make happe even in seperate crates...but definately keep them totally, at all times, seperated until she is fixed.

| Diapers, panties, belly bands, etc. will not prevent mating. Please separate them, or better yet, have someone else take the male so you don't have any accidents...it can happen in a second.
