The breeder told me she was a silky coat.
But her coat is so hard to manage - maybe because it is soooooo thick.
I thought silky coat was easy to comb or brush.

Even silks matt....maintaining a coat takes alot of diligent hard work....show coats are bathed every 4 days, never brushed inbetween......kept in oil or in wraps.....wraps taken down daily.

She has a silky coat and still mats but just a little on her hind legs where she squats..lol. She isn't that hard to comb/brush but I wish I could learn how to wrap and use the oil on her to make her coat even better.

Mary - I have been following all of your suggestions so far.
It is tempting to comb her inbetween baths!
I actually brush her coat out after bath with a lil slicker brush & then blowdry with the Isnis Brush because it is sooo thick!
Your right about hard work - I am not used to having one with such a thick coat. I guess its that champion blood line in her.

Don't use the slicker unless it's absolutely necessary....you'll do more damage than help.....dry her with the Inis, layer by layer.

I know that Baby's hair is pure silk b/c it doesn't matte at all. When she had her puppy coat it did a little. But now, not at all. Now, my two aunts have Yorkies with pure cotton coats and they get mattes all over...especially under their legs and neck. Plus, silky coats and cottony coats although both soft, feel different.

yet her eyes shine green/amber when we take pictures ....
It is probably best to ask a breeder in person or a groomer ...

You are right..If the feet look somewhat like fuzzy bedroom slippers, most likely soft coated.......If the coat reflects light, good indication of silk.
As the reflection of eye color in photographs....I've been told that this is a myth.....although, I've found this to be a good indication, at least 99% of the time.....

I don't do daily maintenance....over brushing is just as harmful as not keeping a coat clean. The heavy moisturizing conditionor should assist in removing any tangles.....If there is huge mat.....I use Chris Christensen Ice On Ice...spray on the mat and work out with the side of a slicker brush.

Brushing a dirty coat only breaks it.

I agree never brush a dirty coat but of course if you keep the coat very short it wouldn't matter. Show dogs are definetley groomed different. Funny thing is I do use a comb on wet hair with wide teeth. Just like my hair I don't use a brush on wet hair I use a wide toothed comb. Whatever works for one doesn't always work for the other. I've never had a problem using a comb on wet hair as long as I take it small sections at a time. I work through a matt with ice on ice and with my fingers. I never use a slicker brush. This is just how I do things....I always have my dogs in oil and wrappers.

I don't do daily maintenance either. Actually, if I didn't want to, I don't really need to brush her, but I do sometimes. Baby has a beautiful coat. Lucky me! An 11lber with a great coat.

Donna, I guess I wide tooth comb wouldn't be bad but, combs do stretch the hair strands....learned that from a hair dresser (my daughter). If you use the side of the slicker brush it works great.....

Funny, my hairdresser of 20 years and my aunt who's a hairdresser have always told me to use a comb on my hair when wet but again it's a "wide" toothed comb. Like hairdressers, groomers are different as well. I prefer my comb to a slicker brush because the way I've done it, Radar's coat has grown so much so better not fix what's not broken LOL
If I didn't keep Radar in oil with his wrappers I'd have more matts than I could shake a finger at and I've never had mildew so again if it's not broken no need to fix LOL

What does a dog look like if they're in "oil and wraps", I've no idea! Is there a pic?
