| Groomers - which way do you brush? Please help. Do you brush the Yorkie coat the way in which it grows (straight down) or do you brush it in a different direction? I took Mia to get groomed last weekend and had a not so good time. After several issues of discussion they took Mia in the back while my hubby and I waited. We started to hear this squeaking sound and ran to the window to see our baby being 'raked" sideways!!! One girl had her, after giving her a bath, and was just raking her horizontally! I'm no expert... but I didn't think she should have been brushed thay way - matts or not. They said oh she had matts that you we didn't get to. Well I won't disagree.... she has a cotton coat and she can get matted coming out of the bath if you're not carefull. But would you use a rake and brush her sideways? Poor Mia was actually snipping and squeaking about it. You could tell it hurt and she didn't even use her other hand to hold it down. She wasn't trying to comfort her or keep her calm either. Now mind you my paper states that you must talk to and be very gentle with Mia. She is not allowed to be left in a cage or cage dried or left unattended at any time. Then of course I go on to list what to cut and how much. But as you can see... my concern really is about how they treat my Mia. When I talked to the owner about this she went in to talk to the shampoo girl and of course the rest of the groomers said oh yes she was matted. Well people - she was not that matted! Anyway back to the point.... how do you brush your Yorkie??? Thank You!

| I brush mine in the opposite direction to ensure that all the tangles are out, but he has a great coat, it doesn't matt easily. But I am very gentle with him. The way that girl treated your beautiful dog is not acceptable, even if she was matted.

| hi, i think i would have slapped them people- they are not dog lovers- they are only doing a job. a friend of mine carried 2 bof her yorkies to the groomers- asked them to trim nails, cut hair on bottom of pads, and not to cut hair at eyes- well they didjust the opposite- cut hair at eyes, did not trim hair on pads, so now we groom all of her dogs and mine- 8 total. one of hers- when we tried to clip her nails- she would pull away and try to bite at us- she has gotten better now. we had a lady that shows her yorkies to tell us about Nature's Specialties Quicker Slicker. i spray it on the hair, and use a wide tooth comb, to comb from the bottom of hair to the top. for a bad mat- i saturate the mat with quicker slicker, and work very gently to remove mat. i hope this helps you. |

| DO NOT go back there if you are not comfortable. I took Loki several times to a bad groomer before finding a better one, then a great one. He STILL hates having his nails trimmed. He would shake when I dropped him off AND when I picked him up. Now when he goes to the groomer he runs to her door to greet her! I would say, with the exception of accidentally getting the quick of a nail once or twice, you should NOT hear your dog yipping. That means she is being hurt. BOTH of mine get mats and I gently work the mats out. They will try to pull away because they are bored and they will let me know when I am pulling too hard, but they will not just start "sqeaking" unless they are being hurt.
