Hello,I have a question for you breeders here.I have a 7mth old yorkie and hie hair is thin and wispy and staticky I am wondering if shaving him down before he turns one year will somehow mess up his coat.I have heard so many different stories about this and just want a professionals opinion.should I wait till he is a year or is it sfe to shave him down now?...............all replies much appreciated and wanted. |

| Coat question Hi: I've been a groomer for many years and have had yorkies as long as I can remember. Aren't they wonderful???? Anyway, what I have discovered over the years, if you take the puppy coat off and allow the adult hair to grow in, you'll be certainly amazed. This has been my experience. When my pups are about 4 to 5 months old, I take their puppy hair off with a short hair cut. Leaving the face alone. You wouldn't believe the difference. Puppy coats matt so easily. They play and wrestle so much, its hard to keep a puppy coat tangle free. The adult hair begins growing, replacing the puppy coat. You'll see a difference. Much easier to keep, etc. But, you have to remember also - alot of what the final coat appearance and texture will be depends on the genetics of your baby. Thats when seeing the parents of the baby come in handy. With some Yorkies, it doesn't matter what you do. (Take the puppy hair off, or let the adult hair come in naturally) - as an adult Yorkie - you may always have problems with matting and tangles of the coat. If thats the case, it would be easier on your baby to keep a short hair cut on him or her. They will be much happier and lots less work for you. Hope this helps. Linda |

| Yes, cotton and soft coated are one in the same. There is also a wooly coat....and modified silks (combination silk and soft). There is also a variation on silk coats, some are coarser in texture, thicker shaft....

| confused!!!!! Ok here's the problem .......my cousin has a yorkie also and she got him at 9wks and his hair was always silky but thin and sparse now he is 9.5 mths and his hair is getting thicker but still silky he is black and gold deep gold and its just starting to grow, my delima is ....aren't silky coated yorkies silky from day 1(he has been) and if so wouldn't that mean you can tell as early a 9weeks or younger? what do you look for? and is it possible for a yorkie's coat to change once out of the puppy stage into silk or am I crazy?.....Please! breeders help me out here.I am not breeding and I just want to know if keeping him in full coat will ever be a possibility..Also what are the different types of silk and how do you know??/ |

You can't tell whether a dog will be silk from day 1.....it's a wait and see process. Usually about 4 months of age you can see at the roots, the reflecting shine of the coat. Without seeing a pic of the dog, it is simply impossible to give you somewhat of an answer. You have a true silk that breaks color, hopefully to the desired dark steel blue. You also can have a modified silk (a combination of silk/soft) or a coarser silk.... The true silk reflects light and is cool to the touch, even in the warm sun....

| Thank You! Mardelin I appreciate your attention to my questions.I would really like you to take a look at my boy.I first have to get my digital from my cousin and I will also post her boy so you can see what I mean.also since I last posted I notice that his silver is now turning dark.he started turning early on his head at 3mths and his body turning silver by 5mths I was recently going to shave him as the black with silver roots looked funny.but in just a couple of days i see no silver it almost blend with the black again but its not black.I AM SO CONFUSED!!! I really wanted a deep steel blue with silky coat.whta give with this little guy ? |

| Just shaking my head on these little ones.just as soon as I am asking for advice on the silver color its gone!!! the silver is now blue/grey and it seems as if the quantity has doubled in a couple days??I was going to puppy cut him because the silver roots and black puppy coat contrast were so different.now it looks black again but its blue?I love him but wow just the transition is amazing alone.I am jealous of you breeders you get to see this all the time and I can see you just laughing at us novices when we panic.I am excited more each day because there seems to be a new suprise for me with him.I am a stay at home mom.so either its early stages of blindness for me or he is!!! changing just that fast |
