Default Coat question

Hi:

I've been a groomer for many years and have had yorkies as long as I can remember. Aren't they wonderful???? Anyway, what I have discovered over the years, if you take the puppy coat off and allow the adult hair to grow in, you'll be certainly amazed. This has been my experience.

When my pups are about 4 to 5 months old, I take their puppy hair off with a short hair cut. Leaving the face alone. You wouldn't believe the difference. Puppy coats matt so easily. They play and wrestle so much, its hard to keep a puppy coat tangle free.

The adult hair begins growing, replacing the puppy coat. You'll see a difference. Much easier to keep, etc.

But, you have to remember also - alot of what the final coat appearance and texture will be depends on the genetics of your baby. Thats when seeing the parents of the baby come in handy.

With some Yorkies, it doesn't matter what you do. (Take the puppy hair off, or let the adult hair come in naturally) - as an adult Yorkie - you may always have problems with matting and tangles of the coat.

If thats the case, it would be easier on your baby to keep a short hair cut on him or her. They will be much happier and lots less work for you.

Hope this helps.
