| Cutting their nails. I have a small problem. My boy charlie can't go up the wooden staircase at my home. Because his nails have grown. last time that i can remember cutting it was last summer. so now he has a hard time coming up to the second floor and cries so he can be carried up. Now we had tried to cut his nails just the other day, but it hurts him. We have also cut his nails before and it didn't hurt him like now. I asked my friend why this problem. and he said that theirs a limit up to where you can cut da nail because theirs a bone or something. can any one help of show me pics how to cut his nails? or show me a thread already done. i search but nothing. We have the proper nail cutter for him. picture of the boy. http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/5662/dc2ch7jk.jpg |

| vet My vet cuts nails for a $5.00 fee. I just stop by without an appointment and they do it really quickly. That way i don't have to worry about buying nail clippers or cutting too deep. You should check and see if your vet offers the same service. Here is a link to a good article about how to cut your little boys nails if you want to do it yourself. http://www.pets.ca/articles/article-nails.htm Hope this helps. |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | He's adorable. I'd be crying to if my toenails haven't been cut since last summer. I trim my dog's nails at least once a month. When they get too long, it IS painful for them to walk because the length of the nail causes the toes to push back at an awkward angle. Sorry, but this is a form of neglect. If you can't do it or are afraid to do it, take him to a vet. My vet(s) charge $5 to do nails. Also, the nail will start to curve back under and can pierce their own skin (in extreme cases). You boy is probably crying out because his toes and feet are sore from walking on nails that are too long. Really, this is something that you, as a responsible pet owner, should be keeping up with. There is NO bone in the nail. There is, however, the "quick" that if you cut too far back, will bleed. It is difficult to estimate how far back to go because yorkies' nails are black and you can't see the quick as you normally would do in light toenailed dogs. http://www.ehow.com/how_2453_trim-dogs-nails.html

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | OMG over 6 months with no trimming ?? What I would do is get him to the vet and let them show you how to cut them properly - you can hurt him if you cut too short - usually a good rule is stay above the curve but if their that long - then let a pro show you - it really can hurt their little feet if the nails are too long..... most yorkies HATE nail cutting so to be safe - don't try it yourself or you could cut too much .....they will bleed if you go too short - just like our own nails. |

| I could and would never go that long without cutting my dogs nails. They grow like weeds. As stated before he is probably in a lot of pain with his nails being so long. I have one baby that is a drama queen and cries and whines before I even touch her nails. I would get them professionally done if you can't do them yourself. I wish I could find a vet that charges only $5.00. The vet I got to charges $12.00. |

| I would definitely get the vets help to start off with. I watched a few times and am now able to do them myself. I was terrified more than poor Punkin at first - but after you learn it is so easy. Punkin doesn't need her nails trimmed very often. She walks a lot on pavement and that helps keep them trimmed down. The vet here charges $20 (+ 14% tax) ...so even $12 sounds great!

| yea my first 2 hate to have their nails done. Louie will whine and act like he wants to nip me, plus the jerking of the paw makes it difficult to do it as well. My vet has done this for me before as well. Or the groomer. But last night, it my hubby, my daughter, and me to get the job done. And then after it was all done, they got treats and kisses.

| Someone here also said that it doesn't make that click sound if you do nails right after a bath. Its the click sound they hate so much. You have to cut really really short to hit that quick also. Adonis got one of his nails caught in an afgan, and it ripped 1/2 way off. I couldn't get it off, so took him to the vet when they opened up. Nail was broken close to the quick. She charged me like 9 bucks, and did all his nails while I watched, teaching me how to do it. The only one that bled was the one that was broke 1/2 way off. And that one, was much more than 1/2 way, it was close to all the way off. May want to try clipping nails every day to get to where you want them. Sometimes when watching tv, I'll do one foot, give them a break, then start up again. Repeat till finished. |
