Default Dematting comb: a great tool to have with matts

I just ordered a demattting comb to use on Jewels hair for the matts. The blades cut right through the matts. I was looking at getting her shaved down and now it looks like I wont have to. I really reccommend this to anyone who has problems wth matts. I just ordered her some new Biogroom shampoo and conditioner and I am going to give her a hot oil treatment too.

Could you please post a pic of it? I bought one for Lillie..she has A LOT of tiny matts and it doesn't seem to work very good..I didn't pay alot for it and maybe this is the reason why it doesn't work well. She turns into "demon puppy" when I brush her...she HATES it! I didn't want to spend alot on one if I couldn't use it.I too, am thinking about giving her a puppy cut. She is only 7 1/2 months old so I am hoping with time she gets better...she is going to have a pretty coat and I really don't want to cut her.

Thanks Chachi!

ok thank you. I will usually shampoo then condition...I leave the conditioner on while I brush...It is actually easier to brush her when she is wet! Maybe because she can't run away!! Don't get me wrong! She still isn't easy to brush but easier when in the sink..I so wish she would let me brush her...she would have such a pretty coat...of course it isn't long yet...she is still young. I have seen some of the de-matting combs..I was looking for one that has curved up ends...I am so worried, the way she bites at the brush, that she is going to bite the de-matting comb and slice the inside of her mouth..let me know how your's works out...I'm not impressed with the one I have.

Thanks for your response!

Have a great day!

I wouldn't recommend anything that I had not used and loved. For matts, it's just better for the hair not to cut it with a matting blade. your going to get different lengths of hair now. Just use a slicker brush, start from the ends of the hair and work back toward the root.

I have one of the those dematting combs I bought for the Maltese but the blades are seriously sharp and as was mentioned it demats by cutting some of the hair.....the matted part.......but it will leave hair at different lenghts. I have not used my comb for over a year now.........I brush EVERY day without fail and it keeps the mats from becoming so bad that I can't get them out with some conditioner and patience.

If the coat is in good condition from proper food and oils, and you use a gentle dog shampoo and conditioner and are brushing your baby every day without fail, the matts would never become so bad that a slicker can't get them out. You first take your fingers on any matt to gently pull them apart then take the slicker to them starting at the ends.

Those are the ones that scare me I am SO worried that she will bite at it and slice her mouth...I think Villette posted a pic of the ones that she uses..they were curved up on the end of the blades. I am trying to find one like that. The ones I have don't look like that and they are disposal. I only paid 10.00 for them...they have a little curve to the tips but, I don't find they work very good...Maybe a more expensive one would work better...The girl at PetCo told me that if I am not happy with it that I could return it. I think they were like 35.00...right now that's alot of money for me... I am thinking of giving Lillie a puppy cut and starting over from scratch...maybe with shorter hair she won't mind the brushing as much and then eventually get used to it by the time her hair is long again.

You can get a Matbreaker at Petsmart for a little over $20. I works really well. You can see it on Petsmart's website ($16.00 on the web). I absolutely love it! If you baby bites at your brush, just get a helper to hold them while you cut the matt. It doesn't take long. Don't use it like a comb, just put the comb at the root of the matt and twist the matt breaker a little at a time and it won't pull their fur and hurt. Then you can take a regular comb and ease the matt out a little at a time. It really works and you can purchase replacement blades when those get dull. Good luck!

For those that use matt breakers or dematting combs, just be aware that they do cut some of the hair. As a result you will end up with varying lengths of hair which then matts even easier. Try applying a good conditioner full strength and gently brushing with the conditioner still on the hair. Some big matts are hopeless but lots of little ones will often brush right out if the hair is slippery with conditioner. Try the brush on your own forearm to make sure you don't scratch your little one's skin. If the brush leaves scratches on your arm, either you are brushing too hard, brushing at an improper angle (keep the brush flat), or you are using a bad brush.
