| Help!! Shedding? Do Yorkies shed? Axel is a little over a year old I have been told that he still has puppy hair. His hair is slowly starting to lighten from the bottom; however, I have been finding patches of hair all over the house and just pulled a pach of hair from him, he doesn't have any bald spots and lately I have been having to brush him almost daily. Is this normal????? |

| It doesn't sound normal to me. I'm not positive though. Bumping this too...hoping someone with more experience can shed some light.

| I'm going to PM a couple of people and point them in this direction. At 1 year old, that doesn't sound normal to me, either.

| I would say Yorkies shed about as much as a human does, usually from hair damage. It's hard to tell what is normal without seeing how much hair you are talking about. I agree with everyone above that it doesn't sound normal from your description. Did the hair come out in your hand, or were you brushing him? In your avatar, it looks like he has a thick coat. Is it cottony? That might be part of it. For peace of mind, I think I would take him to the vet for a general exam and talk to the doctor about the hair loss.

| Yorkies are not supposed to shed like double coated breeds, I think twice yearly. But like Kristin mentioned, Yorkies lose hair just like people, it's dead hair. So when you brush them, the hair on the brush is hair that was falling off naturally. Sometimes their hair falls off in clumps. It's perfectly normal. It's not normal when the hair loss is accompanied by scratching & bald spots. Princess used to leave clumps of hair on my sheets. She's had skin scrapings done & a cytology where they look under the microscope to determine if it's mites or bacteria. For Princess' case, it's always bacteria found on grass, environmental allergies. Since then, I keep her in a shorter cut & give her baths weekly. I have not noticed any clumps of hair falling off her since her hair cut. If you're concerned you can get a skin scraping done w/a cytology, it doesn't cost much (around $30) & it will give you an idea of what's bothering him (if anything is). Hope all will turn out ok.

| Thanks everyone for the response :-)it isn't coming out in large clumps just little pieces around the house. Maximo, hedoes have a thick cottony coat. I have since made him an appointment with his vet to get it checked out. Thanks |
