I would say Yorkies shed about as much as a human does, usually from hair damage.
It's hard to tell what is normal without seeing how much hair you are talking about. I agree with everyone above that it doesn't sound normal from your description.
Did the hair come out in your hand, or were you brushing him?
In your avatar, it looks like he has a thick coat. Is it cottony? That might be part of it.
For peace of mind, I think I would take him to the vet for a general exam and talk to the doctor about the hair loss.
