Yorkies are not supposed to shed like double coated breeds, I think twice yearly. But like Kristin mentioned, Yorkies lose hair just like people, it's dead hair. So when you brush them, the hair on the brush is hair that was falling off naturally.
Sometimes their hair falls off in clumps. It's perfectly normal. It's not normal when the hair loss is accompanied by scratching & bald spots. Princess used to leave clumps of hair on my sheets. She's had skin scrapings done & a cytology where they look under the microscope to determine if it's mites or bacteria. For Princess' case, it's always bacteria found on grass, environmental allergies. Since then, I keep her in a shorter cut & give her baths weekly. I have not noticed any clumps of hair falling off her since her hair cut.
If you're concerned you can get a skin scraping done w/a cytology, it doesn't cost much (around $30) & it will give you an idea of what's bothering him (if anything is). Hope all will turn out ok.
