Default Morkie

Hey guys. I might be a little off topic but I was curious about something. I just got a morkie. I was looking at her coat and she seems to have an undercoat. She's 8 weeks old. Is this normal, or am I seeing it wrong? She has black and gold hair on her back but when I part her hair, I see fuzzy gold hair underneath. I thought yorkies and maltese only had 1 coat so it just seems confusing. Maybe this is just puppy hair? Any answers would help. Thanks!

If it doesn't work its bacterial and requires antibiotics...considering its you though I'd bet its just eye boogie stains.
I can see how this concoction would work loll. Also read that boric acid (in contact lens solution) will help & is 100% safe to use around their eyes. A Veterinary Guide to Tear Stains

I'd never use peroxide around the eyes... never! Boric acid is in most eye washes... I'd never use contact lens solutions either... too much junk in them... preservatives and such....

I wonder if they have all natural contact lense solutions-I don't wear any correctice lenses personally but used to be a visual feilds technician...I'm going to give the opthamologjst I used to work for a call tomorrow.

I know my vet cautioned about peroxide when I listed it as a ' suppliment'we use for my mini schnauzer, but so far we've never had an issue.

I don't think so... these are products I very thoroughly researched a few years back... unless they've come up with something new... my eyes are going bad and the fine print is getting smaller and smaller so I'll stick with what I already know, lol.

The thing is... some dogs may have an allergy to thimerosol(sp), a preservative used in many eye products, and most of those products sting a little in the human eye, so I can't see my dogs tolerating it too well.

Also, warming any solution to be used in the eyes is much more comfortable (for people and pets).

I also keep plain eye wash in my emergency first aid kit. Peek got a bite wound inside his lower lid and it swelled up so fast... I grabbed the eye wash and gently rinsed all around and in the eye just before we headed off to the vet's.

By the time we got there his eye looked normal... I almost forgot to tell the vet about it as he had quite a few other facial lacerations. He tried to attack Tinkerbell. She opened her mouth (she's 15#, he's 6#) and his head went inside... she did not bite down but he sustained wounds from her teeth on his nose and around his eyes. Nothing major, but due to the location of the wounds and the rapid swelling, a vet check was in order. He healed up fine, no permanent damage...

Maybe is is the start of one of the several color changes that yorkies go through?

I agree!

I believe that I prolonged Max's eye problems by using sterile saline eye drops to clean hair and things out of his eyes. The preservative in the bottled saline gave him terrible problems.

When I started using regular water, the problems went away.

I see that you use regular eye wash -- they all have some kind of preservative in them, or something that irritates Max's eye. We used the purest of pure eye wash and it still caused problems.

I'm glad Peek was okay.

When I try to bring them up into her topknot, it looks funny and you can clearly see those two strands, which are darker, going up into the topknot. They may be darker because they're permanently stained from tearing.

Is this a common problem? Does anyone have a solution?

I'm always been hesitant to snip them off because my breeder told me DON'T CUT NOSE HAIR. But she's almost 4, and I'm getting tired of it.
Teddy's mustache is always getting into his eyes, and he has a little staining from the tears it produces. The only solution I have found is to constantly comb. I fix his eyes/mustache at least 5 or 6 times a day.

Thanks for your inputs! I got the link from a Maltese forum & there are many who uses the contact Lens solution w/boric axcid. I'm sure they're very careful & only apply it on the tear stain & not get it in the dog's eyes...but the neg risks are too high!

I'll just continue snipping & cleaning their eyes 2-3 x's a day. Turbo & Princess has almost grown out their short cut & Princess can have a top knot again! Turbo has grown out his nose hairs & they don't poke him in the eye anymore.

Systane, Bauch Lamb abd Opticas sensative (my old boss actually uses this one daily) are all preservative free in both eye washes and contact solutions.

Children's eye was was suggested-rx specifically for infants...but getting the rx is a bit problematic if its for use in dogs.

Ironically a veterinary opthamologist was suggested for inquaries...

Okay...I put my glasses on, lol. CVS makes a Sterile Saline Solution that is preservative free and I also have OcuFresh Eye Wash, also preservative free. They both come in tiny bottles. I transfer the liquid to a clean glass baby food jar and set it in a large cup of very warm water to warm it up, then use an eyedropper to apply it to the eye, a cotton ball or a Q-Tip, so I don't contaminate the remaining product in the bottles.

I would think tap water would be irritating, as it contains fluoride, chlorine and other additives to make it healthy for ingestion... IDK.

As for those tear stain removal products... the ones I looked at say 'keep out of the eyes'... which is impossible to do (I always get eye makeup remover in my eyes, bc wetness and eyelashes just wick the stuff up into the eye) so I figure the same thing would happen with my dogs' eyes and those products.

Even my vet was going to give me Animax AB stuff for Peek's wounds, and I was concerned with getting that in his eyes. So I asked if Opthalmic AB Ointment would also heal the skin around his eyes, as I had to use some in his eyes for the wound inside his lower lid anyway. I also worried that he might start rubbing the area and get the Animax (for skin wounds) in his eyes. She said the Opthalmic Ointment would work on the skin too... so I didn't have to worry...

The CVS preservative-free eye wash is what I used on Max. I agree that it seems tap water would have horrible things in it that would be more irritating, but the eye wash irritated Max's eyes.
