My furkids Donating Member | dry and itchy Bentley has only been with us for 3 weeks now. I gave him a bath when we got him home...wanted to get "our" scent on him...anyway...his skin is dry and kind of flaky...almost dandruff looking...he is scratches alot...there is a small spot on his chest that almost looks like cradle cap...no opened sores, scratches,bumps...nothing...I am thinking it's either a food allergy for maybe his skin is just dry... I was going to order oatmeal shampoo from pet silk but wanted a little input on this before I spend the money. Can somebody here give me a little input? would appreciate it Thanks!

| I have not used Petsilk but have used Episooth by Virbac which is sold by vets. You also could make your own collodial oatmeal bath for him. Just put a cup of quaker oats in a blender, grind them up and mix with water in the sink and let him soak in it for 10 mins. ETA: after the soak, rinse well with warm water

My furkids Donating Member | thank you! he doesn't itch all the time...so I am thinking maybe just dry skin...as I said I did notice a little patch on his chest that kind of looks like cradle cap...someone on here just posted asking about food allergies and someone responding chicken based dog food. his food IS chicken, turkey and duck...I'm wondering if that could be it? but I would think he would be itchy all of the time...it isn't getting worse but if it continues I may have to bring him in and have my vet take a look..

| I think that was me! Sophia doesn't have extreme itchiness, at least it is less now that I've started adding oil to her food. I've been using a dog conditioner made for itchy skin and I think it has helped as well. I used the very last of it last night. I went to get more today at Petsmart and they didn't have any...not even sure if they are going to continue carrying it. I've been really thinking about trying some oatmeal products. I'll keep reading this thread to see what everyone recommends. I just want my girl to be comfortable!

I doubt it. You live in New England. We are all dry and itchy. Try the oatmeal concoction I suggested. Or, just buy the Epi-sooth shampoo (I don't like the conditioner). It seems counterintuitive but the best thing for dry skin is warm baths to sooth the skin and hydrate it. Good luck!!

| We use minksheen shampoo but I have found if I mix it with water and put it in a recycled hand soap pump bottle it is easier to use and rinse. I spend more time rinsing than actually washing the pups- behind the ears, chest (where the soap runs down) armpits and between the paws, and the base of my wheatens tail ( it has a little fold where it sticks up straight) are extra rinse spots. If they start scratching a few hours after their bath I re- rinse! |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Best thing for dry skin is water. If he tolerates baths well I would fill up the sink or tub to the point where he can still stand and doesn't feel the need to "swim". Have him stand in there for 10 minutes while cupping the water over his body to hydrate his skin. Then you can drain the water and bathe him. I'd use a moisturizing shampoo with aloe and oatmeal and then a deep conditioning treatment. You can microwave the conditioner for a few seconds to make it warm, then massage that all over into his coat. Wrap him in a warm towel for 10 minutes. Lastly, rinse rinse rinse with room temp water then a quick rinse of cooler water to seal the hair follicle. During the week, in-between baths, give him a spritz with diluted leave in conditioner (or just water if the leave in will make him too greasy) and massage it into his skin. I wouldn't change his food just yet because its probably just dry winter skin he's suffering from (like most of us right now, my hands are so itchy from being dry). Hope this helps.
