Is there hope for this coat?

Much to my husband's dismay, I would love to see our male yorkie/papillon sport the traditional yorkie "do". He looks quite yorkie in some of his features but has a VERY fine, thick cotten coat. (sometimes grabbing him the nickname "fuzz head"). I know some yorkies have a similar texture of fur and I was just wondering if you have had much success in taming it and making it "silky". I've never let it grow long enough to find out but I'm curious if length and some product will achieve the results I am looking for.

Looking for tips with fairly inexpensive products, maybe "around the house" type ideas.

First few pictures are of him, last image is what what I would like to attempt. What do you think, is it possible? or is "fuzz head" going to have to stick to a puppy cut? (still cute lol)

If you go on line to HSN. com and look under Pampered Pets, they carry a shampoo and conditioner that is great. Comes in different combinations and is alittle pricey but worth it. All natural ingrediants and really works. Also, I have started mine on the NuVet supplements that are great too. Helps the hair, skin, itching, allergies and alot of things. Good luck. In the shampoo and conditioner I always order the coconut and vanilla. They seem ummy after their bathes.

What you're trying to achieve requires a silk coat and lots of time....You can't make a cotton coat into silk...doesn't work.

Yes, I agree that there isn't any way to transform his coat magically into a silky coat. I do love it, but I was wondering if there was anything people tend to do with "cottons" to weigh it down a little so its at least a little less poofy.

I haven't found anything to take out the cotton poof and believe me, I have tried many, many products.

I personally love the poufy look on cute dogs so I don't look for things to change cotton coats - and it wouldn't do any good on my Tibbe anyway as he's so fuzzy. I think a fuzzy dog is cute so I go with that if I have a fuzzy dog. My first 2 Yorkie's had silky coats and I loved them when I had them. I just enjoy whatever type of coat my dog has at the time as somehow I like the different looks, even though Tibbe doesn't look typical Yorkie. Your dog is precious and probably could win any "America's Cutest Dog" contest it entered! What a little feisty-looking cutie you've got there!

I agree he looks yorkie in some features but unfortunately you cannot change genetics and the fact he is mixed. I honestly don't see it ever growing like you want it (last pic).

He sure is a ham though and I personally love the 'poof' he is sporting.

What a great idea to keep the head yorkie/like but the body shorter. Do you think that if I grew his hair out and put in a topknot that I could get a similar result? She is adorable.

And Jilly, thanks so much he is our baby! I do enjoy his coat and love its color/texture, but I have always wanted a little baby with the "yorkie'do" so I'm hoping that if I grow it out a little I can style him similar.

Haha thanks, he does suit the puppy cut well. I'm definitely not looking to change him, I love everything about him. Just curious what a little bit of grooming would look like

He is adorable. How old is he? If he is a puppy he could grow a rather long coat, like a yorkie especially since papillons have a rather long coat. I have 2 yorkies with cottony coats and 2 with silky. With the right products I can make the cottony ones coats look pretty good but not true silky coats. I use a good shampoo and conditioner, one that works well on the cottony coats is Pet Silk. There are others too. if you do some searches on here of grooming products you should be able to find some that will help lay his coat down flatter. I can't wait to see more pictures of him he is so cute.

As a groomer and an exhibitor....there are products out there...but, they only last for a short period, then the poof comes back. Your pup is a mixed breed that looks adorable in a puppy cut....

I've kept a couple with cotton coats with a full coat and their coats were very thick. I will tell you it is a lot of hard work and not really possible with around the house products. You have to use a good conditioner and some finishing products and it only lasts so long.

I now keep them in modified cuts much like Zhoie with the body cut very short and the legs and face long. This is what I would do if I were you. It's a lot easier to maintain but still gives that long coat illusion especially if you like to wear clothes on them. Plus they enjoy it too as that means less brushing for them and is much cooler for the warmer months.

The hair on the head you can usually tame much easier to achieve a look closer to the picture you posted of what you want. The hair on the body however is a different story.

Here is a picture of my yorkiepoo Trixie. She has a very thick cottony coat and for a long time I kept it full, it was to the ground. In this picture it wasn't full length but it kinda gives you an idea. The hair tends to be a bit less poofy the longer it is because the weight pulls the hair down but the poofyness never completely goes away.
As you can see the hair on her head isn't poofy. It never was, just thick.

It was a lot of hard work and I noticed she would get hot easily so I then gave her this hair cut and she has been much happier.
If I was to put a shirt or dress on her you wouldn't ever know her hair was cut.

I have a soft coated yorkie. I too wanted to see him in a nice long coat. That was not a good choice for us. Constant matting on his little body, and he was miserable being groomed. I gave up, cut his body short and his face is still rather long. I can put it up in a pony tail, but honestly I don't. I clip his hair out of his eyes and let him run and mess it up. he looks good and is happy again.

Awe, the 2nd picture in the short cut, is absolutely adorable! She looks so cute that way.
