| need help with brushes! Hello, My yorkie Eli is almost 6 months and i am looking into getting him a good brush. I've read about maddan and chris christensen and don't know which one would work best. He still has short hair and doesn't have a lot of it but he has a lot of knots, which when i try to brush out, it rips the hair out and i know its hurting him please help! |

| You are going to get different responses. Some like the Christensen brushes, others the Madan brushes. Best to read the threads on brushes and make your decision then. I haven't used the Christensen brushes so can't comment on them. I bought the Madan brushes through Topline Pet. Jenny is a member of YT and she helped me pick out the right ones I needed. Are you using any kind of detangler before brushing him? What kind of brush are you using now??

| i don't use a datangler so if u know of any good ones, id love to try it! as of right now i use a plain comb and its not doing a very good job, i tried to take out his knots carefully with a metal brush but all it does is rip his hair out and i cant stand to watch him in pain. I also just ordered milksheen shampoo so yet to try it... |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I like both the Madan and Christensen metal pin brushes. They both work about the same, but I do prefer the Christensen brush bc it is small. It's almost pocket size and fits my hand better than a large brush. The brush that I like better than those is the wooden pin brush. Christensen makes a good one, but I found a human wooden pin brush that is just as good quality but wasn't quite as expensive. You can use a little cornstarch sprinkled over a mat, work it through with your fingers.....the mats come out easily. Use a detangler spray on the rest of the coat, brushing a dry coat will break the hair. Any hair conditioner watered down can be used as a detangler....put it in a little spray bottle.

| Oh Victoria, You definitely need to get a good pin brush. As I am not familiar with the Christensen brushes (they are obviously very good as a lot of YT members swear by them), I would contact Jenny of Topline Pets - she is mimimomo on YT and ask her about the Madan brushes. I bought mine from her - super fast shipping. Her website is toplinepet.com As far as a detangler. I always spray Beamer with Miracle Coat Leave in Conditioner before I brush or comb him (you shouldn't brush a dry coat) or I will use the Crown Royale Magic Touch No.1 Grooming spray instead. Crown Royale also have a detangler, but the grooming spray works good. Beamer doesn't normally get mats, but when he has got mats I have used the Cowboy Magic on them - but it is "heavy", and plain cornstarch works well on mats. Since I now have a groomer coming to the house once a week I find I only need to comb him twice a day, I rarely have to use the pin brush (and the Madan grooming comb is great - I have the 7inch grooming comb, the small mustache comb and I use the tail comb on his topknot) It is an outlay for the right tools, but they are a good investment as they will last a lifetime. Sue, the groomer likes to use the brushes and combs I have rather than her own! I do finish his grooming with a brush through with a Kent bristle brush. (100 strokes - I know it sounds crazy, but his coat does shine after)

| If you will give me a little information, I'll give you a simple plan. I like simple. I have more brushes than brains. But that is only the start. I know coat care. It caries from dog to dog. What are your goals with his coat? What type of coat does he have? What would you like to do with it? What are you doing to care for it now? |

| He is six months and still has baby hair, its very cottony and tangles quickly. I took him to the groomer's and they were able to take his mats out, i bought him a pin brush and have been using that. I would love for him to have a healthy and shiny coat, preferrably thicker as well. I wash him approx. once a week and brush him daily. As of right now im not using a detangler because all of the ones i tried before make his coat greesy. I've only had him for about two months so im still figuring it all out so any help will be greatly appreciated. Last edited by Victoria Bess; 09-09-2010 at 01:48 PM. Reason: doube post |

| I've used both Chris Christensen and Madans and my Madans win hands down. They are also half as much as CC brushes. Madans now come in a pocket size for those who like a smaller brush. Jenny just got a bunch of new colors in the pocket sized brushes too! toplinepet.com |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I use Madan and CC brushes. I like the Maden for my silky coated ones and I love the CC wooden pin brush and regular pin brush for my 2 cottony coated girls. I also love the Tangle Teezer I bought from someone on here.
