YT Addict | can't brush at all!!! Gabby is a beautiful little girl with big brown eyes. We were told by the groomer she is a "golden". She is now 9 months old and very hyper. Her hair is very fine and almost totally white. It would be beautiful, but she refuses to let me brush her. She bites, both me and the brush, wiggles, tries to jump off the table, etc. I just had the brilliant idea to get her cut short, but because her hair is so fine and white, I am afraid she will look bald! Any suggestions??

| Gabby is beautiful. Her aversion to brushing will make any kind of grooming difficult and potentially dangerous in the case of trimming/shaving. You need to train her to accept grooming. Start working with your little girl every day holding her and touching her all over. Give her a massage. Make it an enjoyable and bonding experience. Do this when she is drained of energy after a walk or play session. Make sure you are calm and confident when you train and groom. Be patient. Start with short sessions and gradually increase the time. Introduce the grooming tools and let her sniff them, but don't let her bite them. Make sure you aren't tugging on her skin. Hold a section of hair in one hand and start brushing the ends of the hair shaft, moving up a little with each stroke if you don't hit any snags. Carefully pick apart tangles and mats with your fingers first. Hope some of this helps. |

| We use to have this problem with one of our girls and would give her a bone to chew while we brushed. We had to pick one she LOVED and only give it to her when it was brushing time.

| I do this with Teddy when he gets tough tangles. Hand him a Texas Toothpick and he doesn't mind me detangling. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Great advice. It is important not to let her chew or bite brush/comb or play with it. Sometimes our little ones ask for lots of patience on our part and determination too. The calmer you are, the more your baby will sense this. If you have a partner he/she can feed the little one when you start to brush gently gently. As Maximo said. Start from bottom, section out small piece of hair. Also you can get a rat tail comb - the tail is great for gently detangling. How is she will the nail clipping? Make sure you do the dew claws too. If they get too long they curve around and can pierce the skin.

| Hi Vicky, Zeke is just now getting to the point where he will let us brush him. I started by using a very soft cat brush, and we still brush him with this some. You can also start by brushing with the back of the brush just to get her use to the feel. |

| Maddie gets her favorite treat when im done bathing, grooming, nail clipping ect.--its the only time she gets it--the minute i get her grooming bag out, she flys into the chair waiting for me to pick her up and get busy. the second im done she sites up and looks at the cupboard that holds her puppy crack (lol thats what i call it)--a special toy, bone while the actual grooming a good idea, maybe follow up with a special treat.

| In addition to everyone suggestions I would like to add one thing that I do with mine. I like to always groom on top of the dryer in my laundry room. I lay down a towel and all of my supplies and have been doing this since they were puppies. They know that it is not play time and they just let me do their grooming as needed.
