| Stinky Ears Is there a specific way of cleaning their ears? Sherman has a terrible smell in one or both of his ears on occassion. At first I thought he was getting an infection because of the smell but the smell comes and goes and he does not seem the least bit bothered by his ears. Any ideas?

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Have you plucked the ear inside his ear canel? It needs to be removed. A build up of wax and dirt causes it to smell

| The smell is most likely an infection starting. Check his ear leather to see if it is red and warm. Dogs with ear infections get stinky ears. It's usually a yeast infection caused by what bchgirl said...a buildup of hair and wax inside the ear. The ear can be tender when it is infected, so if your pup won't let you touch it or handle it you'll have to go to the vet for drops. Otherwise get some powder and pluck out the hair and some ear cleanse

| I use the Vet Solutions ear cleaner and it works really well. It doesn't dry out the ear and it makes it easier to wipe out the gunk with a cotton ball. Kalina tends to get a yeast infection in one ear every once in a while and this stuff works really well.

Knowing you, you've taken Sherman to the vet and found that he has a yeast infection and he's been treated. Your vet probably removed all the hair from his ear canal and told you that it has to be maintained. Vet Solutions ear cleaner is one of the best. It has a drying agent built into the cleaner. Purchase it at revivalanimal.com.

Hahaha Mary, He did go to the vet and they found only a possible yeast infection....They did suggest drops and cleaning his ears regularly. They did find a second set of teeth that they will pull if they are not out by the time he is neutered (Beginning of the year). We did notice yesterday he lost one of the 4 teeth only 3 more to go. Do you think pulling the teeth is neccessary? Another question for you is....One of the puppies is getting neutered end of December. Her vet offers pain medication for after the surgery as an additional cost. She has aked me if it is an additional service, is it truly neccessary to give the after surgery pain medicine or is something over the counter just as effective. It bugs me that if it is neccessary that they would charge pain medicine as an extra cost.

Most vets provide the pain meds, however they do charge for them. Do I recommend it? Yes. I'll explain; first it keeps them down while they are healing, since they shouldn't be running or jumping. Second, a few years back I attend a canine behavior seminar....one of the subjects was canine pain. Most canines will not exhibit outward signs of pain......it puts them at a disadvantage.....survival of the fittest. A camera was left on in a vet hospital, dogs during the day exhibited no outward signs of pain and no pain meds were administered, when the hospital was quiet at night and everyone had left, a couple of dogs that had undergone surgery, were howling in pain.....

It just amazes me that the after surgery pain medicine is an option. Our vet charges one price that includes all medications including after the surgery pain meds. I hope Sherman loses the last three teeth before his date so he doesnt have to go through that too. Oh and by the way Sherman Tank is now 12.6 pounds as of this last vet visit . He will be 6 months on the 29th...vet now says he wont be surprised to see SHerman hit 15 pounds by the time he is full grown.

Well you named him correctly, Sherman was a good name for him. But, how great that he is solid and can take rough housing and you don't have to worry about broken bones, because they are too delicate. I have a 12.5 pounder....gorgeous representation of the breed.....just a bit oversized......
