First Time Grooming - Advice? Hi, I'm new to the forum! Found it when searching yorkie-related info online and have found so much terrific information. Very appreciated Our baby is a 6-month old male "Remy" and it is time for him to have his first "real" grooming experience. I thought I'd post for the first time to see what suggestions would be made for selecting a good groomer for yorkies? Further, does anyone have input on specific "to-dos" (or not-to-dos) when it comes to professional grooming? Remy is accustomed to my bathing him (usually weekly) and although we do a bit of battle in the tub he tolerates it pretty well. His overall temperament is pretty easy going - I can easily roll him on his back, rub his tummy, clean him after potty, play with his paws, etc. but I am reluctant to do any hair trimming or nail clipping myself and would like to defer to a professional. That being said I don't need him to get freaked out by a bad experience.... I have heard we should try to find a groomer who will allow us to stay with him, however one of the first groomers I called (who is apparently highly regarded) said that was not a possibility.... am a little confused! Any input would be most welcome

| Just keep calling different ones. That is why I have a mobile groomer, she comes to my home every 6 weeks, baths, trims, does the nails, ears and anal glands. It is $50 but well worth it. She charges more if she gets a hair cut but I keep her hair long. I tried different groomers when she was young and they would keep her for 6 hours and then forget to call me when she was done. I am so grateful for my groomer. Good luck.

Thanks for the input regarding a mobile groomer. I actually have a call into one place that apparently offers this service. What you described seems to fit with what I had in mind actually... I want his coat to grow so I am not really interested in cutting much of the coat.... just attention to the maintenance areas!!

like someone else said- just keep calling until you get what you want- I would never leave Layla again at the groomers- she used to come home SO upset- there are a lot of other dogs that bark and it really upset her- i think a mobile groomer is a great idea!

Thanks for all the replies To follow up, Remy was at the groomer on Wednesday. If you happen to live in Baltimore and are looking for a good groomer I would definitely recommend The Laundry Mutt in Federal Hill. Hannah (groomer) was terrific. She was extremely patient and spent a lot of time talking with me about what I wanted and holding Remy before getting to work... Quick summary 1) During your appointment time there are no other animals at the facility, which I found really nice. No distractions with other animals, etc. They are a smaller operation, and groom 10-12 animals per day in back to back appointments... 2) I went with a basic, sanitary groom since I am going to try to let his coat grow. This took care of all the "necessary" stuff but did not seem to over whelm him. He did OK with the clippers almost everywhere, she had to use scissors to trim the hair around his eyes. 3) I was able to stay there the entire time, he only was a bit anxious with the blowdryer - would not let her blowdry his head. As long as he could see me he did not bark or cry... there was plenty of fidgeting, but overall she said he did well for the first time!
