| How do I use a dremmel? I would like to use the dremmel for toenails but I've never done it. How short do you go? I've heard it's not like cutting them because the dremmel kind of cauterizes the quick as you go...right? For those that do use one...do you only go to the quick or do you go a little shorter? |

| i am currently waiting for mine to arrive but i have seen it done as far as i know it does NOT cauterize as you go.. it's just sand paper and makes the process easier... I go only as far until i can see the quick starting.. Layla is usually pretty good at letting me know if i'm getting close i guess if his nails are TOO long and you need to get them shorter or less theyw ill just keep gettin glonger... i'd go past the quick but oh the poor little guy and get ready for blood. If Layla's ever got so long that i coudlnt' control them.. i'd probably ask the vet to cut them but i sure hope that never happens! |

| Oh No Don't go into the quick EVER if you can help it. That would be very painful and they will fight you after that. If the nails are long and you need to get them shorter, then just trim or grind more frequently, the quick will recede if you keep clipping them. Last edited by JeanieK; 02-17-2008 at 12:17 PM. |

| No, their nails aren't too long...we clip them weekly. I just wondered how far you could go with the dremmel as apposed to clipping. Thank you for the advice. |

| You have to be very careful using a grinder on yorkie nails. You can get the hair caught in the grinder. And it doesnt cauterize. I am a groomer and I have quicked a dog with the dremmel

| Oh Gosh! I can't imagine using that at all on Diesel. I use just regular clippers for dogs. That would terrify Diesel and he would never let me clip his nails after that.

| People use them all the time...it leaves the end of the nail rounded so they aren't left sharp like when you clip them. |

| I use an old fashioned fingernail file for that instead. Less chance of hurting him in my opinion. I guess if the lilttle ones don't mind it and you are use to useing them it should be ok. For me personally I wouldn't like it.

| Some people put their paws in a stocking and poke the nails through this way no risk of snagging the hair

| I just bought a new nail clipper that runs on batteries. Red is when you are in the quick zone. Yellow, is too close and when it turns green then it is safe to cut. I hate cutting their nails. Years ago when I was grooming (just learning) I cut a little dogs nail too short and bled something terrible. Ever since then it makes my stomach feel sick to do nails I am so afraid of cutting them too short. |
