Its this time of year that I make all of my dental appointments for my yorkies teeth to be cleaned... I really try hard to maintain their teeth through out the year. BUT as the new year gets closer I see I have lost the battle. So everyone has to go in for their dental appointments.... I HATE THIS>>. I am so nervous the whole day they are at the vet... I am always thinking are they going to wake up... If I was better at maintaing them thru the year I would not have to take them. But they are so hyper and I cant hold them for very long. They get upset and act like they are goint to die.

I spoke with a breeder a few years ago(I cant remember who it was maybe she is on her) and she was shocked I put my yorkies under so often to have the teeth cleaned. She said she gave them some type of medicine 1 hour prior to trying to clean the teeth. She never has problems with cleaning them. She does it herself. Why I am asking is I had a huge scare last year. My Scarlett almost didn't wake up.. She was limp for over 24 hours. I brought her home and she layed in my bed all night without even getting up.. I was scared she would stop breathing.... I really dont think we should put her through this this year....attached is her picture... I love her so much. PLEASE HELP>>>>>>

might it be something like Rescue Remedy? i know that calms them down for car rides....

What anesthesia did the vet use? It should be on the breakdown of your receipt if they do that where you go. I would not do a routine dental on any dog. There has to be a good reason (enough plaque to compromise health).

I did try that. It did not work at all. I waited and waited thinking it might take longer to take effect. But it never did...

I dont know what it is called. But I know it is done through a IV... They give them the smallest amout that they can.. But they say there is always risk.. As far as the teeth being bad... I dont know if it is just my yorkies. But if they go over a month without me trying to clean them.. They are nasty. And get this!!!!! They are on dry food and I give them dental bones by the lbs... I just got over 50 dollars of bones last month...

Some of them just have really bad teeth. You might want to use a different toothpaste. What are you using now, and what do you brush them with? Someone suggested giving treats as you go along to keep them calmed down. I think that was a good idea. I cut my son's dogs nails and I always have to give her treats, so she doesn't think about what I'm doing.

Uh oh.

Yorkies should have an IV during surgery for fluid and an emergency line to them. They should not use IV anesthesia to maintain them. You need to use a gas anesthesia for Yorkies (all dogs actually), either Isoflourine or Sevoflourine. This is given through a tube down the throat. Some vets give this gas, before they put the tube in the throat, through a mask, so they can place the tube. Other vets do use an injectable anesthetic only so they can intubate. These would be extremely short acting. Either way is acceptable but Yorkies should never go through an actual surgery without gas anesthesia. You also have to be careful that they don't use barbiturates as the injectable before the gas. I believe one exception to this would be Propofol which is very safe. I would be talking to your vet...

I use the C.E.T. toothpaste from the vet. I use the Triple brush and the finger glove brush... I like the dental scaper. It really works well and I can do a tooth in a few seconds. But the fighting begins after the first tooth.

Thank you for all the great info. I will ask all the above questions. I could be wrong on how they sedate them. But I do know they have a IV. Because I have seen the area on her front legs.

I try to brush them when they get their baths. Which is about every 2nd week. I do it while they are in the sink and I have conditioner in the coat.. You can see yellowish color already on the teeth at the 2 weeks. Which drives me crazy. I guess I should maybe do it more often.

First, she is just PRECIOUS!!!!

Second, I want to say that my vet just gives some sort of shot (a very small dosage) of something instead of doing an IV/gas when getting their teeth cleaned. I will have to ask and find out!

My vet said that Mojo has some of the best teeth she has ever seen in a Yorkie (since they are known for having bad teeth), but she recommends a light professional scraping/cleaning once a year....and I don't think that is a bad idea at all!

Have you tried using the PetzLife spray for teeth. It works great and might elliminate these cleanings altogehter. www.petzlife.com
