| Layla is getting spayed next Wednesday I am very nervous because to me, she's soooo small (4 lbs & 6 months old) and I can't bear to think of the pain she's going to be in. The surgery is Wed. morning, I pick her up after work Wed. night, and if there's no complications, I can take her home. I will take the day off work Thursday and my boyfriend is taking Friday off to watch over her. I have a doggie cone she can wear over her head to prevent licking or pulling her stiches. My vet has performed this type of surgery on small dogs, it's his specialty. I have looked over this site and I think I have armed myself with all the info I need, but if anyone wants to give me any advice on what I should expect, any signs I should look out for or any more questions I should ask for Layla's pre & post op care, please send them along. Anything you can think of, no matter how silly or small will be greatly appreciated. I had Rylie ( my 21 month old male Yorkie) neutered and he was running around the next day but everything tells me, it's going to be a longer recovery time for Layla Bean. Thanks in advance! | She could very well be up and running around like normal the next day! Ruthie was spayed just before Christmas and even though I had been through a neuter with Oscar, I was still sooo worried about her. She was 8mths and about 2.2lbs... She also had 12 teeth pulled... I brought her home that night and the next day she was bouncing around like nothing had happened. She recovered very quickly - absolutely no problems and I'm sure your girl will be just the same! The only thing I can say, since you're picking her up that night, just be prepared for her to be really lethargic. A lot of people pick their dogs up the day of the surgery and think there's something wrong because the dog is so tired - it's completely normal - AND necessary - lots of rest will help her body heal. Good luck to your little one!

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Hi, i just noticed you lived in weekawken. I'm from Clifton, and i have a sister in edgewater. so far your the closest person to live next to me and morgan. As for layla's spay, i'm sure she'll be absolutely fine. what vet do you use? morgan was 2.5 lbs when she was spayed at 6 months and i took her home the same night after her surgery. she was sleepy, but not too sleepy to beg for food while i was eating dinner. Layla will be tired for a day or so but then be up and running around like her normal self. You don't even need to use the cone unless you think she'll fuse with the stitches. i just stuck a diaper and a sweater on morgan so she couldnt touch the stitches. some people here recommend putting a babies onsie on your pup after surgery.

| Gracie was her usual self when I brought her home the next day. She had been on pain meds and I continued to give them to her for 3 more days. My vet used liquid stitches to close the skin so there was no worry about her picking out her stitches. I hope your baby does well. Let us know how it goes!

| when my layla (GREAT NAME ) was spayed she also came home the same night... she was VERY out of it... had to have help to stand up to pee... it was so sad... but each day she got a bit better.. she was a lot smaller than your layla at the time and it took a few days to wear off.. make sure you buy her a onesie to put on after to keep her from getting at the stitches... i made sure i was up every few hours to check on her... but she was just fine.. needed to just sleep it off... let us know how it goes.. i'll be thinking of your Layla |

| The waiting is killing me... We brought Layla in this morning to be spayed. The vet is probably operating on her as I write this. I feel horrible. Layla kept kissing me this morning and I feel like I sent her to the executioners. I know this is the best thing for her. I trust my vet. But the waiting and not knowing is killing me. I hope she's not scared or in too much pain. I'm not allowed to call until 3:00 which is around the time they think she will wake up. I have no idea how to stay sane & focused at work until 3pm. I'm worried for Rylie to. This is the first day they have been apart since she came home 6 months ago. He probably trying to find her and he probably misses her. Sigh. I'm such a worrywart.

| Layla Bean It's been two days since the surgery and I wish the vet had warned me what I would go through! LOL! Layla was loopy when they gave her to me, but otherwise seemd happy to see me. She fell asleep as soon as we got home and slept the whole night through. I had to hold her up when she asked me to go potty early in the morning and then she went straight back to sleep. I had already asked for Thursday off so I stayed home with her-- and good thing I did. She spent the majority of her day tring to figure a way to get to her stitches. I tried the doggie cone and she got that off pretty quickly. As my last resort I put her in a Onesie but Little Miss Houdini figured out how to kick her her back feet through the holes in less than an hour. And big brother Rylie? He keeps trying to lick her too, because he thinks he's helping! I could not sleep all night for fear she'd lick away at the stitches and they'd start bleeding or get infected. And she wasn't just licking the incision, she was trying to nip at it with her teeth. So I am back at work today, soooo sleepy but happy Layla is doing ok. She ate a little bit yesterday, ate more this morning and actually took her first poop! Layla is being watched by her dad today- but I am afraid she's too much for him. He's not use to having her all day to himself. Add Rylie into the mix-- Rylie's going crazy demanding attention since Layla seems to be getting all of it right now-- and daddy is probably going bonkers right about now. I'm placing bets with co-workers that he calls me by noon, pulling his hair out of his head in frustration... Thanks for all the kind words and support, I love this site!
