| Traveling with Sam So it looks like I will be traveling with Sam and look to you guys for some advice. What is the best carrier that is going to be most comfortable for him? Trying to get the best rate on airlines, might include the flight plus a 4 hour drive, has anyone had experience with this? Sam doesnt get car sick. He loves going in the car. For the first time flying, anyone have tips? I want to make this as stress-free as possible for him.

| Twalla, we used to travel with tumi a lot. I love the pet flys carriers cuz they are comfy for them and also sturdy. The size Small will be perfect for Sam. It is airline approved. I got the carrier in advance and made her get used to it. She felt safe and got used to the carrier. For her first time flying, I gave her a little bit of the calming drops I got from the vet. I don't even think she needed it. She was so good and slept the whole time. Now she is a pro at flying. I made sure I have her fav blankie in the carrier.

| It seems most people on YT prefer the sherpa carriers. I bought a sturdibag size large and loved it- plenty of space for my Baci and fit fine on airtran flights under the seat. Airtran only cost $69 each way for Baci. I called before booking my flight to confirm they had availability for pet travel and then called right after booking my flight online to make the reservation for him. I think there is a sticky with flight costs for different airlines. Hope this helps. Have a safe and wonderful trip!

| The best carrier for Sam is one he is comfortable in. Whatever you choose, do not get anything higher than 11" as it simply will not fit under most airline seats. Many of them actually have a 9" height limit. Generally, the larger airlines have more space, the smaller regional airlines have less space. There is one Mesaba flight I was one where the small Petflys carrier did not fit under the seat without tipping it sideways. The airlines all say the pet needs to be able to stand up and turn around in the carrier, but realistically this isn't happening for almost any animal. Turn around - yes; stand up - no!!!! Sissy has flown several times without any issue. I have not given her anything prior to flying. She is also really good in the car as well. So, if Sam is a good traveler by car and doesn't have issue being in a carrier, you will most likely not have problems with him. If he is is a whiner when in a carrier, then expect the same on the plane. Airline regulations state the carrier must be kept closed and under the seat in front of you. As long as you don't open the carrier, as soon as you take off, you can put the carrier on your lap and keep it there until you begin descending. This works great for many as the close proximity to mommy/daddy keeps them comfortable even if closed in a carrier. Most furkids will go right to sleep with the motion. The floorboards can get really cold even during the summer, so stay away from a window seat (which will have the coldest floor) and have a blanket you can tuck in the carrier or put over it to prevent drafts. For active furkids, a bully (or other chew stick) can keep them quiet and calm for the duration. For longer flights, you can always take the carrier to the plane bathroom, put a disposable pee pad on the floor and let them out to potty, they throw the pee pad away. Hope this helps!!!!!!

He has purse like carriers now but they are way higher than 9" so I know he would need a new one. He doesnt whine or bark in his carrier when we are out shopping or what have you, he is very quiet. When he was little I would put a bully in there but not anymore. The flight would be about 3 hours so I think we would be ok on potty time but thats a great idea So definetly keeping that in mind! I also like the idea of being able to hold him in my lap (in the carrier), I think that would make him feel safe and I can always *sneak* a quick hand in and pet him. Which would make ME feel better I am almost certain it will be American Airlines, so far its been non-stop cheaper than Southwest even with the extra charge on pet fees. Thanks so much for the great information!
