Hot Rod surger for Grade 3 LP

It all kinda happened quickly. I didn't realize that is was this bad either. For some reason he started not wanting to walk when we went out. He would take a couple of steps and sit or just stand there. I would have to coax him or literally pull him (not like him at all!) Well, he also had a couple of peeing accidents and thanks to YT member Chachi, I took him in for a UTI problem. He did have a uti and the vet took xrays for his legs and found that his hip was out of alignment and wasn't sure if it was a problem in general or from his knee so she referred us to an ortho surgeon.

Turns out his little leg is bowed from the way the knee is. Hot Rod is, for the most part, pain free as he and Maggie tear through the house like maniacs and he runs all over the back yard. We started watching and when he was on an incline in the grass, he would pick his leg up every couple of steps. The sunday night before his appt, he and Maggie were playing and I don't know what happened but all of a sudden he yelped so loud and came over to me and just wanted to lay still. He must have laid stillf or about 2 hours and then he did start walking again.

Hubby and I had discussed the possibility of surgery prior to the appt and said that if it was something that was immediately necessary or something that would be beneficial to do early on to prevent more issues then we would do it. As it turns out, as a lot of you know, a grade 3 needs to be taken care of. So hopefully he will have a very good chance for as full a recovery as possible and be able to go for walks by summertime!

Will do. The dr was very positive so that helps quite a bit. Turns out he has a yorkie himself so I feel very confident that he understands the needs of these little guys.

What grade is your little one's lp? My concern with his recovery is the downtime. Maggie is such a hyper little one that we are going to have to separate them. She is constantly jumping on him and pushing him. Dr. said absolute crate time. He recommends a 3 x 3 area. My friend is going to loan me her shepherds crate so he will be able to see out while he is in there. Poor baby. He's had run of the downstairs for a year. I know that I will have him out an on my lap at night but it just won't be the same for him. He hasn't been confined in a crate for the last 14 1/2 mos since we've had him. Good luck with your little one. I know that he will do fine. When do you think you will be having your surgery?

My thoughts and prayers are with little Hot Rod today. It will be nice when he can run around pain free. Especially because a little one with that name needs to live up to it! Ha Ha

Poor little Hot Rod! He's definitely in our prayers. Please keep us updated on his progress. My Chelsea will need to have this surgery too and I'm so worried about her recovery period. She's my 'wild child' and has never been crated or separated from her partner in crime, Murphy. Her surgery won't be for at least a few months so I'm hoping to learn all the tips and tricks I can in the meantime.

Omg..just saw this..how did i miss this? I am so sorry. We are praying for little Hot Rod. I know he is gonna come out like a little trooper. my tumi and gracie have Grade 2 LP..Hopefully they don't need surgeries..

He is a grade3 too, our ortho surgeon gave us a little time to prepair for the surgury (save money) I told him we have emergency fund for the dogs but would rather save for a few weeks if possible and he didn't seem like that would be an issue. He kinda gave me a few month time frame with the surgery. So it will be soon just don't know when.
