It depends what software you're using, but often if you hold down the shift key while using the crop tool, it crops in a square. In iphoto, there's a popup box in the lower left corner that allows you to select "square." Good luck. Oh, an option is to not crop it in a perfect square. Set the widest dimension at 75 pixels and let the other dimension fall at whatever it wants to be, like 75 x 60 or whatever.

| Thanks for the reply. I just tried your suggestion, and I did create a perfect square that is 75 x75 pixels. However, the file size is still too big--36 kb. And the max. file size is like 19 kb I think. So how would I shrink that down more without making the picture soooooo tiny? I would appreciate any more suggestions. Thanks for the help ! |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Hmm, I do remember that happening sometimes and can't remember how to shrink the file size w/o shrinking the picture. If you want, you can try attaching the picture as it is to a message and I'll try taking a look at it and see if I can figure out why it's too big. To attach a photo to a message, scroll down, click manage attachments, "browse" to your photo and upload. The only thing I might try to do is lower the resolution. If you're saving it at 200 dpi, I think that might create a larger file. I'll try lowering it to 72 dpi.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Great picture. I'm not sure I shrunk it, though. Looks like you did everything right, and it's still 36 kilobytes. My software said it was 76 x 75 pixels, so I shrunk it to 75 x 74. Maybe YT automatically rejects everything over 75, regardless of size. If this doesn't work, ask someone smarter! Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

| Well I tried uploading the new size and it is still rejecting it as file too large. I will keep working at it, and if you come up with anything else let me know. Thanks, I really do appreciate all your time. |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Anyone else know how many kilobytes a normal-size avatar can be? And why her 75 x 75 photo says it's too big. It looks like it's 36k

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Well, I did one more thing that shrunk it below 36 kilobites or bytes or however you spell it. Each of these attachments is a little smaller, and worse quality, than the one before. You might try them one by one and see if it fits. If the limit is 35 kilobytes, it might work.
