| Please share your experience with Metacam or NSAID's or Prednisone My beautiful Darla (aka mush mouse ) 6 pounds 13 years old, Severe collasping trachea. Her coughing is getting worse, the only medication she is on is hycodan. I did not want to put her on Prednisone ,after reading all the nightmare stories but was considering it,one vet suggested metacam, after reading about it I am scared to death to use it. I have to control her coughing it is so bad .Please anyone have any experience with either ? One warning to all , my baby never had a Collasping trachea till 4 years ago when I took her to a local Vet to have her teeth cleaned, she came home coughing and never stopped. She also came home limping ! When I asked the Vet they said it was normal after cleaning to cough, two weeks later they said she has a collasping trachea. I believe they used the wrong size tube in her throat and damaged her trachea and they must of dropped her and hurt her leg! Over the years it kept getting worse (scare tissue ) Please share your experience Thanks Nikki |

| Nikki, I am so sorry to hear about your little girl yorkie...I don't have any answers for you, but I am praying that you will get the advice that you need. The only thing I know about prednisone is that it's pretty effective, but the downside is that their immune system goes down big time...I'm not sure about long-term use of Metacam...I will be saying a prayer for your little mush mouse

| I had a Westie who was on pretty high doses of prednisone for a long time for a mast cell tumor. The only side effect that I noticed was increased thirst and urination. In the beginning she starting having accidents in the house - but eventually she learned to hold it until I got home. I'm sorry to hear your baby is sick. Why don't you try the prednisone, and if she starts to have objectionable side effects, you can always wean her off it. Good Luck!!

| I am very sorry to hear about your little Darla having a collapsed trachea. My experience with a furbaby on Prednisone was very positive. My first yorkie, Laciebug had a terminal brain condition that caused swelling in the lining of the brain. After the diagnosis, the University of Gerogia vet's prognosis was very dim indeed. They sent her home with two weeks worth of meds and then told to contact my regular vet for follow. I found out later that through conversations between the University vets and my local vet, that they didn't expect her to live for the follow-up. Laciebug was a real fighter and made it to the two week follow up and was put on a daily low dose of Prednisone. She lived for almost five years with little or no side affects. According to my local vet dogs don't generally experience the harsh side affects of the Prednisone that humans do. Good luck to you and Darla - please keep us posted |

| tye my nearly 14 year old yorkie has been on it for a few years now, he has 1mg every other day as the vet said its best to have a day between pills as this helps to stop the side effects, he said if tye needs the dose upping then he will put it up to 1 and a half mg every other day. tye doesnt have any side effects at all from it. he does wee quite a bit but thats cause hes on frusemide for the fluid in his lungs due to heart failure. |
