Anyone's yorkie have low bood sugar...we had a scrare - YorkieTalk.com Forums

A few weeks ago we had to rush Hallee to the vet before opening hours. Hubby had already left for work and I heard Hallee throwing up. She did this 3 times and would just sit hand her head. She would not move or look at me when I called her name. This is totallyl the opposite of her personality. I immediately called hubby at work 7am and told him he had to come home. We took Hallee straight to the vet after calling the emergency number. She started shaking on the way to the vet.He tested her blood and she had low blood sugar. She had to be given an IV and we had to make sure we fed her table spoon food every two hours. The week before she had been sick and was taken to the vet and found out she had chemical inbalance after taking her temp and checking her poo.. She was given meds. Wonder if the meds made her not eat as much to cause the low blood sugar. We have two Yorkies and had not noticed her eating any less than normal. We keep a constant watch on her now. No problems since. Have you ever experienced this. She scared us to death. Can not be too over protecting when it comes to our babies.

How old is Hallee? It's very common in young yorkies...if you don't have nutrical you could use Karo syrup...pancake syrup, just a little goes a long way. How low was her sugar?
My Winston started having these episodes at 2 years old...and he eats really well. We're still trying to figure out what's going on with him...a year later. Good luck with your baby...hope this never happens again.

There are several members that have dealt with or are dealing with hypoglycemia. From what I hear the seizures are terrifying. Hope your baby is alright. You'll get good information here.

If you know how to search threads search mine on hpo....I have a hpo baby who would just drop into a seizure from it..yes terrifying, and can be controlled by you. Its not eas but if you really want to make sure she is oks make sure she eats every 4-5 hours even through the night. SOme will tel you do not wake her up to feed, but DIggy's seizures happens evertime after a long sleep without food. If they wont eat give nutrical. I cooked everything under the sun for Diggy just for him to take like 4 nites and be done...then I was off cooking something else to make sure he had something in his belly at all times. Yes it is VERY hard but you gotta do what you gotta do. I wish you the best and keep asking questions....your doing the right thing.

Isn't she about 1.5 yrs old? Its not normal for a Yorkie this age to have low blood sugar. I don't think that the vomiting was caused from the low blood sugar. Its more likely that the vomiting caused the low blood sugar so you need to find out what caused the vomiting. Speak to your vet and continue to keep a close eye on her.

I agree its not normal for a yorkie to get hypo at 2 years old but its not unheard of. Bella gets low after a bath...when she gets chilled she seems extra sensitive to low blood sugar. SHe also gets low if she is in a stressful situation like car ides....I always bring the nutrical with me when going bye bye. She has only had 2 episodes where she showed major symptoms, the others were a lil shaky and lethargic so its not a huge issue but one to be aware of and be ready for it. Oh I forgot I had also put frontline on her and given her interceptor. SO that mayhave caused it too...now i never give 2 things in the same day so i can pin point what it is. I agree keep and eye on her and I hope she has no more episodes!

Yes, I can relate! The first time this happend to Bailey, we woke up in the morning, opened her kennel and she wouldnt get out of it. She was completely limp we picked her up and she was like a rag doll. Tryed to stand her and she just fell on her side with NO response. I was terrified, I thought she was dyeing! It was soo scarey. We rushed her to the local vet but they were closed. Then I rememberd I had nutrical in my purse so we gave her some, then ,made her drink water. Within 5 min she was walking around and licking me. I will never forget that. It happend one more time after that but hasnt happend since.

Sorry to hear about your baby..Pedilyte (sp) for children unflavored works well also. It keeps them hydrated and has all kinds of good stuff in it..I use this instead of water while they are not feeling well. If they won't drink it on their own then I use a syringe. You do what you have to to get them better

I know how scared you are I went through this with Gizzie and I rubbed light karo syrup on her gums until she would respond and lick it off my finger. Hope your baby starts feeling better soon. I have heard a lot of people on here use nutrical also I have never used it but maybe you should keep some with you.

This also happens to my baby Daisy Mae. It is very scary. She is just over a year old. It just happened last night. I guess its pretty common in yorkies. But does it ever stop?

It should how big are they?? If they are that sensitive to it I would give nutrical if they havent eaten as I know first hand how hard it is to get a yorkie ot eat every couple of hours....I had to go to homecooking and basically giving him things I normally wouldnt just to have some thing in his belly! It is scary but with monitoring very controllable (in most cases) I would be sure and have vet do blood work again to make sure it really is rare to have 2 yorkies over a year old being so hypoglycemic (low blood sugar)

I haven't heard of an adult dog having low blood sugar problems, and am not sure what in the world could cause it outside of just not eating anything for a few days.
I'd be buying a tube of Nutri-Cal to keep on hand, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to give her a little each day for a few days.
As for the Pedialyte, I don't think they sell the plain type anymore. I sure haven't seen it. I used it with fosters that were dehydrated.
