Just give him what the vet has prescribed...nothing else! You need to get past the worry about the torb zonking him out. The problem with not giving him an adequate dose is that he will cough and then his bronchial passage is irritated and it sets off a viscious circle. It won't hurt him to be zonked for a bit...the goal is to stop the coughing.

You could ask the vet about hycodan for his cough. But... my suggestion is to call the vet and ask him...not us. No disrespect to anyone, but none of us are vets and should be prescribing meds.

Yes, kennel cough can be very annoying..and last for some time.
