Wahhhh...Stitch has staph! I went to friend's house this weekend to help her out with a major cleaning project and brought Stitch to play in her backyard since it's fenced. Big mistake! I noticed last night that his front legs were all bright pink and irritated-looking and thought maybe he had poison ivy, so I planned on washing him this morning. Imagine my horror when I rolled him on his back and saw that his pink belly had broken out in this bumpy, angry-looking rash! It looks like acne-meets-chicken pox. So I hightailed it to the vet, who thinks he got bitten by ants and got a staph infection. He's on antibiotics for a week, and I had to bathe him in this antiseptic shampoo that doesn't work nearly as nicely on his coat as Buddy Wash. I almost started crying when I washed him because his lower body is pretty much covered in these bumps. My poor baby! (The one "silver" lining in this is at least he's not infested with fleas, which was my initial worry. I had planned on having to deflea our entire house.)

Roxy had (or still has) a staph infection too! (Mild - the Vet said) She had to do 10 days of antibiotics and 10 days of an anithistamine. She still is breaking out a little bit, so I am not sure that the antibs did the trick. I have been washing her in a Tea Tree Shampoo, and I use a tiny bit of Tea Tree Oil on a q-tip and dab it on the small pimple. It is a natural anitseptic. It does seem to dry it up before it can create a 'blister' type of head. The Vet said it will probably come and go (allergies). I don't want to keep putting her on antibs. so I will try to keep her cleaned up all the time.

Thanks, TLC and Archie - It's only been a day, but I think the spots are looking marginally better. Less angry looking. I'm curious about the tea tree oil - I've heard that it's toxic for cats, but it's an ingredient in my favorite dog shampoo, so it must be okay for dogs? Do you dilute it with a carrier oil before using?

Update - the infection has cleared! Hey - Just thought I'd drop a note to let you all know that his infection has finally cleared up. It was pretty stubborn and lingered around for a few days, but dramatically started clearing up over the weekend. I think it helped that I kept that whole area of his belly clean with the antiseptic wash as well. And while I was wary of using tea tree oil on him, it did WONDERS for my own chigger bites that I managed to get. Thank god - I thought I was going to go out of my skin itching.
