I know of yorkies who were 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, and even 10 before they were diagnosed.

Miko was around 9-10 months and around 7-8 lbs when he was diagnosed.

Anyway, I'm sure Winston will be okay :) You're a good mommy to him, and I pray that whatever happened to him is no big deal at all :) No more episodes!

How is Winston today?

My parents have a lab that has seizures. At his worst he had them a couple times per week. They kept a seizure log and figured out the seizures generally happened when he got too excited or startled. The vet put him on phenobarbitol and the seizures are controlled now. He has them maybe once a month at most. I know labs are nothing like yorkies, but just thought I would share.

I hope you're able to find a cause and effective treatment for Winston. Poor little guy. :(

Hi everybody!!! Winston is just fine right now...he acts totally normal between episodes, before and after...it's just DURING that scares the daylights out of me. That's probably why I have put off getting him thoroughly examined...when he's fine, he's fine...and I don't want to run a lot of tests if they're not necessary...I really thought I had it figured out...just simply feed him more frequently...and it seemed to be working, until yesterday. So now I'm back at square one, I really do not think it's low blood sugar alone. I have the day off for Memorial Day, so I think I'll do a little research, to find out exactly what to ask the vet...Thanks for your concern, and please keep saying a little prayer for Winston...

How did he do over the weekend??

Hi...Winston my boy has been totally fine since he had that episode on Sunday, he puzzles me. Going to take him to the vet next week, have to figure out what I want them to do, what test does he need...I don't want to go in there and not know what I'm asking for...We'll just have to wait and see...Thanks a ton for your caring concern, so nice of you!!!

When you take Winston to see the vet next week, ask if you can bring him in immediately when he's having a seizure. Our Bo has seizures from time to time but his is a result of severe head trauma when he was only two weeks old. Long story short, accident, no exactly sure what happened but believe he was attached to mom when she jumped out of the cage to greet my grandkids before school, room was dark and believe a book back wacked him in the head. Bo shouldn't even be here. I hand fed him. He is going to be 4 this coming October. Because he was so young the vet was very hesitant to put him on medication. When the seizures became more frequent and worse, I rushed him in to the vet. That's really the best time for them to see the dog. Needless to say, Bo is mentally challenged but learns more and more with each litter we have. I wish you much luck in finding out the source of the seizures. I know first hand how terrifying they can be. March 2nd Bo had a severe seizure and a stroke. I was fully prepared to have him put to sleep but he showed signs of improvement the following day when I took him to the vet. Most of his seizures don't last too long and I'm usually able to bring him back by holding him tightly and rubbing under his chin and neck with soft talking. Some have been much worse than others to the point I think he quits breathing and his body is as hard as a rock. I thank the good Lord for giving me strength during those times but I know in my heart that with each seizure it could be the last. Hopefully you can find the cause and medication will cure Winston. I'll be praying for him.........and you.

There were 2 different occasions, that I was lucky enough to get Winston to the vet during seizures, that's when they found his glucose to be so low. Both times they gave IV/glucose and he came back just fine...my main concern is he's having the seizure first, and this brings his sugar down. I do always treat with Nutri-Cal now...but in my heart I feel like I'm missing something...something that maybe I can control, that will prevent this from ever happening again. He was 2 years old when this first occurred, and he's never had a head injury that I'm aware of...he eats good, runs and plays like normal...hmmmm...Do you or anyone else out there think a thunderstorm, could trigger something in his brain that makes him seize? He is terrified of storms, and does a whole lot of pacing, before-during-and after...That's the only thing I can think of that he does differently now then he did as a pup...anyway, we'll see what happens at the vets office...I thank you and everyone else for the ideas...suggestions...and of course your caring concern for my boy Winston.

Kathy, I just came across this thread today. I am so sorry that Winston had a seizure. I can't imagine how scarey that must be both for you and for him. I have no advice since I am a real dummy on health issues but I do have lots of prayers coming your way. I know how frustrating it is when you go to the dr. for help and they don't know the answers but hopefully this time he will.:) Patty

Kathy, I only just found this thread about your Winston tonight!!! What with Papi's YorkieTrain, I have read little else. I am so glad he is doing better. My senior girl Spanky had seizures when she was much younger; the reason was always undiagnosed. Each time she was treated with Phenobarb'. As she grew older, their frequency reduced A LOT and she has not had one in several years now. I hope and pray that the same happens with your precious Winston, that they just stop.

I feel kind of silly taking him to the vet tomorrow...When he's feeling good, he is totally fine. But I'm going to take him, asks for some test, I just hope I don't look and sound like an over concerned mom...I want to be prepared...with questions in hand. Sorry to hear your Spanky went thru this, but Oh so happy she's not experiencing them any more, could I be so lucky? I've heard scary things about Phenobarb...and I doubt that I'll give him anything like that unless it gets a whole lot worse. Mostly just want to know what it is, or more importantly what it's not...Anyway, thanks for your input...and well wishes. I'll let everybody know what, if anything I find out.

IMO never feel like your overly concerned...this is like a child and these drs/vets are there to help and answer ANYTHING you throw at them! If the visit is 30 minutes and you pay 40 for the office call....trust me they made thier money! Leave no stone unturned! My Diggy had seizures also and the breeder and her vet tried to convince me he was no seizing and simply trying not to vomit...RIDICULOUS The breeder refused to pay for any tests and wanted to give me my $$ back. NO WAY I spent hours on the phone with the breeder and hours of her trying to convince me I was PARANOID and over thinking this! Thank God for this site I started coming in here and getting advice comparing symptoms and narrowed it down to Hypoglycemia or Liver issue. Did the bile acid, his numbers were great, and his sugar was way down. It was simply Hypo and controlled with frequent feedings, and nutrical. Had I given up, I am sure he would have suffered many more seizures that were completely preventable with some persistance. PLease stay strong and don't feel like your paranoid and over thinking. You need peace of mind and to be able to enjoy your baby. I wish you luck and strength. Get a piece of paper write down your questions AND their answers. I know when I am nervous and upset I forget half the stuff being said. I pulled out my list and went right down it ? after? and the vet actually said, You are the most knowledgable yorkie mom she had ever came across and it helped her soooo much. She welcomes the noted and symptoms, his feeding schedule potty schedule and every little move he made! It probably was a smidge on the overboard side lol but none the less she loved it and applauded me on my efforts for this baby. So ask away and be persistant. This is your baby, and their job to help you!
