| HELP Mickey's Butt?? Is it his glands?? THis is my first time beign a mommy I'm still kind of young (24) but I need advice and I know you will all know here!! I heard that yorkies have glands that need to be cleaned in there butt?? Is this true?? If so how do you know when they need to be cleaned? I'm really confused. A few weeks ago mickey had a problem going to the bathroom and ever since his butt looks a bit different then the norm, for a while he was licking it but he hasn't as much. I did the hot compress on it to sooth him which helped alot, which I got that advice here. He is popping fine now but I am still worried. I don't get Mickey groomed I do it myself because he doesn't like people (I think he was abused as a puppy before I got him) and he would most likely bite them and I think its abuse to have them sit in a cage all day just my take on that. I can bring him to my vet and ask them to clean him I know he's due for a visit as he hasnt' gone since last July but I am very low on money so I want to make sure before I call them. So i wanted to ask you all here first! |

| Well it sounds like your little Mickey may need to have his anal glands expressed. Its a simple and fast trip the the vet or groomer, and dont cost that much $. You could even get his vaxs done at the same time if needed.. oh and this is something you dont want to do yourself. The smell if horrible and tends to linger for awhile..

| Yep, you gotta get it done, Kamari is going next week to be groomed and I will get it done then. Kodak has gland problems where his glands have burst and can be painful. They are opting to do surgery to clean the glands out if the medicine they gave him doesn't work.

| My Bailey has always freaked out about her butt... ALWAYS! She is about a year and a half or so now. She turns and nibbles at her butt all the time. When I first got her, I thought it was because of worms and had her wormed and checked three times. I was told it could be her anal glands so I had them expressed at the vet. Still no improvement. Since you are all talking about that anyway... any ideas for me too?? Thanks! |

| One of the more "suttle" signs is butt licking. A big sign? This nasty smell that comes from below. It doesn't smell like poop, but it's a fishy smell. Speaking of which, Baby needs to get hers done too b/c that fishy smell is back!

Hmm...I noticed a slight fishy smell from Chloe a few days ago, but it's not there anymore. I've noticed that her anus isn't really swollen, but kinda just "puckers" (sorry lol) out a bit. She doesn't have trouble pooing or anything...do you think she needs it done?

| I used to express my Toy Poodle's anal glands myself. It is very simple. If you go to the Vet or Groomers have them show you just incase you need to do it between appts. It's gross, or rather the smell is but it is much easier if you can do it as it causes your dog less stress.

| Is it normal for them to scoot around 2 days after they got their anal glands expressed? |

| Scooting around 2 days after anals expressed I don't think it is normal for them to scoot around 2 days after they have had their anal glands expressed. Some groomers are too rough, in my opinion, and you have to be very careful with their tiny bottoms. I have also heard that the more the anals are artificially expressed, the more they have to be done-- |

It depends...if your baby got it done by a groomer, they express from the outside, only getting some liquid out. The vet, on the other hand, does it internally and squeezes everything out. Now, it also could be that your baby is scooting b/c his/her hiney hurts or they have poop on their hair.

| They are really to express !!!!! The anal glands are at 4:00 and 8:00 in relation to the anus. You just find them in that area, they are like a small grape when full and w/ your thumb and forefinger you have to squeeze toward the anus and at the same time pull away from the dog. The liquid will pop right out. You have to squeeze a little hard, sometimes they will pop........ I do Cuddles while I am bathing her, then you can wash them clean...... Very easy to do......BUT GROSS.......... ...WHY PAY THOUGH......... ????????????/ God Bless |
