Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | to help you out a little, i work for a vet surgeon and we do multiple knee surgeries every day. i don't even bother to watch the surgery anymore because after the first 50 it got boring...and i've only been there 2 months LOL So, it is possible to do both knees at the same time, and in small dogs its actually better because they don't have to go under twice. The chihuahua i am fostering right now has grade 4 in both knees (along with a broken front leg) and once the front leg heals we're doing both her back legs (not to mention she was also just spayed on tuesday...she's a busy girl). Your pup will be able to use both legs after surgery, just not for a long periods of time. Pixie will be able to walk around and go potty with no problems, and you will have to use a sling under her back end to help her walk. standard procedure. Also Pixie will not be able to get spayed at the same time because that has the risk to spread infection.

Clarification - It wasn't the whole having knee surgery and "fix" at the same time that bothers him about doing both surgeries this time. It is the fact that she will be in surgery for quite a while on her right leg as it is and they don't want her out any longer than they have to.

| And for a general update: Since we saw the vet for a pre-surgery and grading thing on Wednesday, Pixie has been in a great deal of pain. Prior to then, she barely showed anything except for sometimes limping or hiking - but even then, not all the time. I guess the poking and prodding and forcing her to bend her leg really irritated things though because she has been flat miserable. When I got home Wednesday afternoon and saw how much pain she was in, I called the vet to ask for something to give her, but he'd had to leave early. So I called my vet locally, and they jumped to the rescue and gave me some anti-inflammatory/pain pills. They are so good to us. I just ran by and picked them up (and refilled her other prescription while I was at it!) Anyway - I gave her that pill as soon as we got home and in a little bit, she was acting half-normal again. Poor, poor baby. Thursday, I called that vet back and explained that she was in a lot of pain now and she needed to go ahead and get in ASAP... They only do surgeries on Tuesday and Thursday, but they put her down for this Tuesday. In the mean time, she's living on pain medicine. Even on the medicine, you can tell she just flat hurts, but it's not near as bad as when the medicine wears off. In anticipation of surgery on Tuesday, I took her today to get groomed... well, shaved really. I figure she'll look really silly half-shaven, so I took her to the groomer to go ahead and shave all over, then we'll let it all grow back together... She looks pretty good in her shave, too. I took some pictures to try to share with all of you, but she is just in so much pain that they're not real good. She wouldn't sit up or open her eyes or anything. Put I'll post a couple anyway... she really does look good, if only she didn't hurt. Her expressions make her look just pitiful.

| Please let us know on Tuesday how everything went. I'm sure she'll be feeling better in no time at all. Kalina works for my surgeon and I'm kind of confused. He refused to do both knees for me at the same time. |

| Pixie goes in at 8 am tomorrow. They are insisting on keeping her overnight, but I'm concerned about them "throwing her in a cage and going home." They think she needs to stay there so she can be supervised in case of any problems... I threw a fit and told them that if she needs to stay and be supervised that she needs to be transferred to a hospital where someone will be there to supervise her. Anyway, I'm sure that I'm causing problems for them, but if they're that concerned about her recovery and possible trachea problems after the tube (she has a collapsing trachea), then we need to make sure they don't show up Wednesday morning and find a dead Pixie. I can just see her having problems and no one being around to take care of her. They'd have a lawsuit for sure. So I'm complicating things and insisting on her being transferred to the hospital for recovery. I know, I'm just a paranoid Yorkie Mom, but I've lost too much to take chances with my Pixie. I offered to transport her myself... if they choose to transport her, I still intend to at least go visit and make sure she's ok. I'll try to update ya'll tomorrow. She should be coming home Wednesday.

| Well, I just dropped her off... They said they're going to put her down about noon and do the surgery. They hope to have her awake by around 3. There may not be time to fix her today though - they don't want her down longer than she has to be. They're still OK with me transferring her to the hospital - and she said she'll even see if they can just let her come home instead of transferring her (She brought that up, not me). I don't care which we do, but I absolutely do NOT want her left in a cage all alone and without anyone taking care of her.... Will keep ya'll posted.

| Pixie is down for surgery. She is expected to be awake by around 2 something. I will give them a call around 3 and check on her. I'm going to be picking her up shortly after 5:30. The vet wants to wait until that time to make the decision of whether to send her home or to the hospital, but they understand my concern and are working with me either way. Also, they are NOT going to spay her while they do her knee surgeries. The vet finally made the decision that she'll end up being down too long if they try that in combination with either leg. They want to do a separate spay. Poor baby. Will keep everyone updated as I can.

| No updates yet... just wishing there were. Pixie's supposedly still in surgery. I'm in class, and I"m sick to my stomach. I feel so helpless, and I'm worried sick.
