| seizures my yorkie Lacey who is a year old has been having very bad seizures for the past 2 weeks or so. We took her to the vet the first time she had one, and the vet gave us some seizure meds. that we are supose to give her 3 times a day. Well the meds seemed to have been working untill today she had another seizure her first in a few days, so we rushed her back to the vet, there was a diffrent vet working today and he said that he felt that her sugar dropping may be the reason for the seizures, if so the meds the other vet gave us wouldn't work. So he gave her a shot of some sugar stuff then let her go back home, and told us to try and not give her any nutrical or anything like that till in the morning and her would take some blood and check her sugar levels. But she just doesnt seem to be getting better like she usually does after a seizure. She keeps tilting her head up like she is looking at something on the celing and keeps opening and closing her mouth, she will do this for a few minutes then go back to sleep then wake up and do it again. My family and I are so confused about what we should do next. If any one has any advice please post and tell me.

| I would have the vet run a Bile Acid test to rule out livershunt

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I agree get her Bile Acid tested. Talk to the vet but they have to fast before the test and you may want to have them keep her while she is fasting if she is having low blood sugar problems. Good luck I will keep her in my prayers

| Yorkshire terriers have almost a 36 times greater risk of developing shunts than all other breeds combined. This is a leading doctor in the livershunt disease. I know a fellow yorkie owner who flew to Tennessee to see Dr Tobias. She is the best and specializes in this disease. here is the site. Lots of good info http://www.vet.utk.edu/clinical/sacs/shunt/faq.shtml Good luck! |

| I'm so sorry you are going throught this, it is very scary to watch. And it's hard.... because it takes awhile to figure out what is causing them. If they ever do.. Also it may take awhile to get the right combo of meds to control them. Here is a very good site on seizures, causes, treatment,..etc Good luck to you and your pup,.. http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-...m/site_map.htm |

| Poor baby! and Poor Mommie! I know how helpless you can feel when they have seizures and not being able to do anything to help. It's one of the worst feelings in the world - I know... Please keep us updated on her progress. I'm wishing her well! Anyhow, until the doctors can find out what's causing the seizures, here are some things you can do to help Lacey. 1. Stay Calm & encourage her in your best "Cheerleader" voice that she is doing great! 2. Grab a towel, she may loose control of her bowel or bladder movement. 3. Have a bag of ice or cold compress in the freezer. As soon as Lacey start a seizure, place the compress on her lower back - between the last ribs and tail. It helps to keep the inner temperature down and it seems to help them recover more quickly. 4. After the seizure she may start pacing for a few to several minutes (Jewel sometimes went 20 minutes or more). They can be temporarily blinded an could walk into walls and furniture so keep an close eye on her. 5. Give her a tiny bit of vanilla icecream (like a teaspoon) to help cool her even more and give her a shot of sugar. Other Tips: 1. Keep a "Seizure Diary" for your vets. A. Note the Date, Time and Duration of the seizure B. Indicate what she was doing before the seizure and how she acted afterwards including how long it takes her to recover. C. If some one can help you, take a video to show your vet. D. Take the "Diary" with you to your vet. E. Call in the seizure to your vet so they can put the episode in their charts. 2. Put a bell on her so you can hear if she's in trouble. 3. If she sleeps on the bed with you, you may want to consider a change since she can fall off if a seizure comes while you are sleeping. 4. Add gelatin to her food (about a teaspoon). It's supposed to be good for brain functions. 5. Get as much gluten out of her diet as possible. Here is a link to an excellent website about canine seizures: http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com/ Here is a link to a thread I started about how gluten affects seizures: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...light=seizures

| Has she pooped lately? Sometimes dog with LS or any liver issue if they dont poop regularly the toxins can back up into their little body causing them to have a seizure
