| Eating Chocolate Hi! This morning Lexie ate part of a milk chocolate coin from my son's stash. She ate about the size of a quarter of it. Of course she ate some foil that was attatched to it. She has been absolutely fine all day. I called the vet right after it happened, and they said she may vomit or have diarrhea (she had neither) but would be ok. Tonight (although perhaps it is just my paranoia!) she seems to be acting like she doesn't feel good. Maybe she's just tired (it IS our bedtime) but of course I am worried. Anyone dealt with chocolate before?

| OH goodness! At least it was milk chocolate, it's the dark stuff that's really dangerous. I'd watch her for refusing to eat/vomiting. If she swallowed some of that foil and it wasn't chewed well, it could get stuck in her intestines. Not trying to scare you, just a heads up. I hope she'll be just fine. I'd think that if she's been fine all day, she's probably just a sleepy girl. Hugs!!! Tracy and Luna |

| My vet told me to give my dog a tsp. of peroxide when she ate chocolate. This makes them vomit. Wait ten min. and give another tsp. if the dog hasn't vomited. It does make them vomit. |

| It was probably milk chocolate and less than a 1/4 of ounce at that. One of those Halloween mini bars is less than a 1/2 ounce. Just to update this thread for future searches, I wouldn't have induced vomiting for the tiny bit he ate (but 1/2 teaspoon per five pounds of body weight of hydrogen peroxide will induce vomiting). Here's the information on the amounts needed to produce a toxic reaction. On average, Milk chocolate contains 44 mg of theobromine per oz. Semisweet chocolate contains 150mg/oz. Baker's chocolate 390mg/oz. Using a dose of 100 mg/kg as the toxic dose it comes out roughly as: 1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate 1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for Semisweet chocolate 1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight for Baker's chocolate. So, for example, 2 oz. of Baker's chocolate can cause great risk to an 15 lb. dog. Yet, 2 oz. of Milk chocolate usually will only cause digestive problems. | Glad to see she is doing alright, just keep an eye on her. I don't think that little bit of chocolate should hurt her. My cocker loves chocolate. No I don't give it to her, she has a huge thing for chocolate, I have to be very careful with her. One time she ate a whole thing of milk chocolate mini bars, there must have been 24!! This was a few years ago, she was very bad and go to the chocolate, and then ripped the package apart and the ate the chocolate. Luckily she was find and didn't have any problems. Not too long ago, I had some brownies she got to. She ate about 4 big brownies. She was a little bloated and drank alot but she ended up being alright. I called the vet and they told me she should be okay because of the type of chocolate it was. I guess dark chocolate or real cocco is what is dangerous for them. She is so bad when it comes to chocolate and even though we put the chocolate up she manages to get to it and tear through it. So we are very cautious around here when it comes to chocolate. Thankfully those are the only 2 times she has gotten chocolate over a period of 8 years. She never gets into anything except chocolate. Just my luck, my dog loves the one thing that is really bad dangerous for her!!!

| I've never had a dog that didn't manage to eat some chocolate occasionally -and have never had one get sick yet. This doesn't mean that I deliberately feed them chocolate - or that I don't know chocolate is bad for dogs. But every once in a while - my dogs manage to get a bite - And, if it's a small amount - I don't worry about it. I am always paying attention to my pets anyway, so if one ever got sick, got diarrhea, or threwup -- I'd be aware of it. **** Actually - my Bichon ate an entire Hershey bar a couple months ago - a Hershey bar with almonds.... He didn't get sick, but he thought he'd died and gone to heaven. ---- He got this out of my sister's purse and was in the bedroom gobbling it up (how sneaky can you get?) - while my sister and I were in the kitchen having a great visit. I think he even ate half the wrapper. He also totally destroyed my her checkbook - that must have been fun! So, needless to say, between her checkbook and her Hershey bar, she puts her purse on the table now. Carol Jean |

| I hope your baby is fine. I used to share my chocolate with my Hazuki and she had never been sick. We didn't know that chocolate was bad for dog at that time. Hazuki ate anything; chocolate, potato chips, drink beer..... And she never had problem. (iron stomach...just like me...) But now that I know some food are not good for dog, I'll be careful not to give them. But if accidentally give chocolate; I know that as long as it is small amount she will be O.K. |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Glad that yours is doing good. I know that my girls each ate a large chocolate chip cookie. I gave them each 1 tsp hydrogen peroxide and they threw it all back up within 5 minutes.

| I had a recent scare with chocolate myself. Lea was having her first experience at a hotel and dug into the chocoates that were left on our pillows (no joke) I freaked out, but she just sniffed for some more. Nothing happened and she's pretty teeny too, so I'm sure your little one will be just fine. They do manage to get into things don't they?! Little buggers...
