Hi,

I have a sweet little girl yorkie named Emily. She is almost 3.She jumped over the baby gate this morning (she does this a lot...we try to make her not do it!) And I could tell by the sound that something didn't go right. She stood there a moment and I bent down and she came to me...but she was walking funny. She couldn't put both back legs down at the same time. She would "march" and her back was humped up like a camel or halloween cat. I picked her up carefully and laid her on the bed. I petted her and her one front leg was stiff. I called my husband and was going to rush her to the vet. Then with in 10 minutes she was fine again....I have been keeping her calm.

The vet has emergency surgeries this afternoon so he can't see her till Thurday...closed tomorrow (wed).

My question......any ideas what this was? She has a "broken bridge" so the lady I got her from said she is not "show quality"...like that matters to me!! LOL!! Other then that she is fine...but her back isn't perfectly staright and flat...she does have a mild "hump" in the lower part...just below her "waist area" on her back.....always has had this. Could this be connected to her "stiffness" this morning after her jump over the baby gate?

I am worried....even if she is acting fine right now. She does run and jump a lot...always has...plays with toys and gets up on our bed at night...it is a tall bed...our Bichon cannot jump up on it.

I am worried and I have tried to find info on line and I can't find anything.

Hi,

the hump I spoke of on Emily's back...it is NOT a lump or anything like that...it is a hump...a slight incline in her back...lower are, just below "waist" area.

Just keep an eye on her. She might have hurt herself and is feeling better now. I think if something was broken you would have known. If you are still concern I would call another vet and see if they take you in.
Also about her back having a hump...it could be roach back. Do a search and you will find loads of info here on that. I believe they live pefectly healthy lives having a roach back. There are serveral people here that have babies with roach back...including myself. Mimi has a slight hum on her lower back..it is unnoticable to other people but I can see it. I love her anyway!!

Hello mama,

If Emily Eats, drinks, poos and pees, and plays as normal I wouldnt worry. If she favors anything especially her leg or back, then I would worry .

Have never heard of a broken bridge - but have heard of a roachback which is just not a straight or flat back, but no injury has ever occurred, nothing actually broken and sometimes these have arthritis as they age.

If she's acting fine, you're probably not looking at an emergency situation, but maybe your vet could give you advice on giving an anti-inflammatory in case in swelling starts.

I was just thinking Rimadyl is going to be your vet's choice (and it has some side effects), buffered aspirin is probably better, but you still have to be careful. The dosage for buffered aspirin is 5 - 15 mg. per pound of body weight. I would go with the lowest dose the 5 mg. per pound. You're going to have to find a low dose buffered aspirin and give a portion of it.

Take her weight and multiply by 5 - this will give you the mg. dosage and then you will have to divide the pill taking into consideration the mg. of the whole pill.

If she doesn't seem to have any swelling or discomfort, skip the buffered aspirin.

You should definitely have puppy stairs by the bed if she is going to be on it. Also, put up a taller gate that she can't jump over.

Hi, I just wanted to thank everyone who has replied, you are all just as supportive and friendly as the little yorkie's you all love!!

We went out and bought the stairs for by the bed,

We use the baby gate to keep the bichons, (2) out of certain rooms.....it has never kept Emily any where!

We are going to do 2 baby gates on top of each other....but only try this when we can watch and see if this will work or only make her jump harder...which wouldn't be good!

I am going to try the buffered aspirin tonight....she just seems to move her one leg just slightly different then the other leg. No big difference in her attitude....she is just as devoted as ever...follows me everywhere and is always ready to get up and go.

I am going to take her to the vet on thursday to just get his opinion.

I have to go in and pick up pain meds for my German Shepherd...she was diagnosed with Cancer a few weeks back....we know we will have to put her down...but for now she is doing good after her surgery, she eats and plays. So we are just loving on her.

You all are great!! I am so glad that I found this board!

I hope her leg is ok. She's tiny, though, and it might be good to get it x-rayed. Your dr will know what to do. Let us know.
