| No Spay, Running Tests-- Does anyone know anything about Addison's Disease???? Mia was scheduled to have her spay today, but her blood work did not come back very well, so the vet is running some additional tests. Her calcium level was too high, red blood cell count too low, potassium high, and a couple of other irregularities. The vet said in all likelyhood Mia would be fine with the spay, but there is a chance that she would not. I did not want to take the chance, because I would regret it everyday for the rest of my life if something is in fact wrong with her, and if she did not recover from her spay. The vet said that various highs and lows can be explained because she is a puppy, building muscle, etc. except the calcium levels. So, they will be doing the bile test (to be completed tomorrow) to see what is going on. There is a chance that it could be Addison's Disease, which I am researching at the moment. If anyone's dog has this condition please please please let me know about it. I think it has to do with hormone regulation, but I am still reading up on that. I just hope it's nothing serious. Meanwhile baby Mia pup-pup has had some pre-surgery anesthesia before the blood work came back, so she is lethargic and drooly at the moment. The vet told us that she would sleep it off until about 10:00. If she does not go back to her rambunctious self by then, we will thake her back to the doc so they can do something about it. I am so worried. I hope she will be okay.

| My sister-in-law has Addison's Disease. It is an underproduction of Cortisol. She is always very lethargic. I'm not too sure how it affects dogs, though. The link that Fran provided should have some great info. Sorry to hear about the irregular bloodwork. I'm sure everything will be fine. This should serve as a warning to everyone to have this bloodwork done! |

| I only know a little about it in humans and how it affects them. It's an adrenal insufficiency which can sometimes be corrected with meds. Alot of times when humans have to take a steroid such as Prednisone for a long period of time, they can develop this because once they taper off the drug, it sometimes takes the adrenals awhile to kick in and do their job without help from the steroids. That's about all I know about Addison's because I've had to take Prednisone before. Addison's can also be caused by other reasons, but this is the reason I know most about. I hope they are able to help your baby with meds and correct the problem. Best of luck to you! |

| Dear all, Thank you very much for your support. Especially Fran and Patti, I really appreciate the links you have provided. It gives me hope that some diagnosed animals are doing well with medications, and to know what I would be dealing with in case it is Addison's. Even if things turn out for the worst, I will have hope. Right now I am praying that it's nothing. I feel so lucky to have found Yorkie Talk where I can share misfortunes and concerns, and get friends' kind support. I really cannot thank you all enough.

| Keep your chin up! It's early and it may not be anything more than things just being a bit abnormal for a short time. Here is a link that is very touching: http://www.k9addisons.com/melody.shtml
