Burned Foot PADS!! HELP!! PLEASE - Page 2 - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Hello yorkie friends. I took my baby to the vet this morning and he said he's going to be just fine. Vet said it wasn't too bad, but that people don't realize how sensitive our little ones foot pads are-which of course was enough to make me start balling!

He said I need to be extra careful when it's hot. He said that the foot pads will regenerate...just to watch him and make sure he's not licking them because it can cause infection. It was just the top layer on one foot that peeled. Louie seems okay, he's just a little moppy today. Vet suggested shoes for him, but I bought some and he hated them...wouldn't let me put them on. So, he said baby socks...like the ones they sell at old navy or the gap with the rubber grip on the bottom. We have bbq's all the time and people come over to the pool and he loves being outside with everyone so I don't want to isolate him when we have gatherings. So, I will try the socks...

Awww, bless his heart! I'm glad hes' going to be ok, poor baby! I never thought about this either, I didn't know they were so sensetive!

Don't get yourself all upset over something you couldn't of known would happen.We all are learning as we go, and each pup is different, some have tougher feet than others.They do make summer time footwear for our little guys, so now that you know your baby has sensitive feet and not tougher ones, why not get him some and have him wear them when you know he will be in places that may be too hot for his tootsies? Just a suggestion.My hubbys family had a yorkie for 16 years named Dougal, he was a gentle soul, but his body was tough as nails.He could go outside in the harshest of conditions, but as long as he had a coat on he was fine, now My LiL Moe, he is a toughie in spirit, but his feet cant handle cold or damp, something I found out by him keep getting colds when he went out in the wet, he now has rainy days shoes, and has no more colds.My grandma always said, prevention is the best medicine.I hope the LiL sweety gets healed quick and is padding about happy soon.I know you said he didn't like them, and neither did Moe at first, but after a full week of making it routine, he began to adjust and paid no mind to the shoes.Summer shoes are light weight and so aren't too hard to train them into.Good luck.

For future reference: I'd suggest keeping at least one aloe vera plant around the house. Nothing can beat them for first aid to mild or moderate burns. Just cut off a leaf, cut it open so the gel inside the leaf is exposed, and slap it on the burn. The pain subsides quickly, it promotes healing, and it is completely non-toxic. In fact, if your furbaby licks it, it's even good for the digestion. And the various first-aid products that you can buy that contain aloe vera are no where near as good. For the most part, they only contain enough to be able to put the name on the product. The raw, full-strength gel right from the leaf can't be beat, and it's equally good for people or puppies.

My first exposure to aloe vera was about 40 years ago. At a barbeque at my (former) in-laws' house, I stepped on a burning charcoal briquet that had gotten tossed out of the cooking pit. A blister was coming up instantly. My mother-in-law stuck an aloe leaf on in and wrapped something around it to keep it there. Two days later, you couldn't even tell where I'd been burned.
