Default Yorkie puppy won't eat-HELP !!!

Hi, We got our Yorkie puppy last Monday night-he was flown in at the age of 8 weeks. The breeder assured us that everything was fine. He vomited all night & we brought him in first thing Tuesday morning to the vet.

To make a long story short-we've been in & out of the vet's office since then. He's been on an IV overnight-the vet even brought him home. He will not eat & we've been force feeding him puppy formula/mixed with some baby meat & nutrical. We also are giving him pedialyte & he does drink water. We've tried all foods.

He's had all tests-been on flagyl all week. We are at wits end. The vets just do not know what is wrong with him. His liver tests are fine.

The breeder says this is sometimes *Yorkie* behavior-any ideas would be appreciated. He's had IV's twice & we just love him dearly. We have a team of 3-4 adults trying everything to take care of him-besides the vets. Thanks...

as long as you are getting something in his little tummy he will come around. I think it probably is just stress of flying and in a new environment. give him time. he might even be missing his other family. maybe once he gets more used to being around you, he will relax and eat normally.
are you giving him the same food his breeder was giving him?

I'm sorry, I forgot to welcome you to YT.
There are breeders on here who vould give you better advice than me but I am remembering back when we first got my oldest, Buckeye. We got him in Quincy, Ill. we had a 3 day trip with him and he wouldn't eat for us either.
we tried everything. the first vet visit showed an irregular heart beat. I had to take him back 2 weeks later(when he was more settled in) to have it checked again. He was fine after he got to know us better.
and again...... Welcome.

Thanks so much. He won't even touch the eukanuba-& we are staying at a friends house tonight with 2 toy poodles -as the other small dog interaction seems to *perk* him up .

We almost have lost him twice-very scary & sad. We are going to try & mix nutrical & eukanuba together. We are feeding him every hour. We just keep praying that will show interest in some food.

Thank you everyone !!! My friend loaded an pic of Tucker so you could see his adorable face. We got some crushed eukanuba & nutrical into him a few minutes ago. We also are feeding him puppy formula every hour. We are feeding him around the clock & it sounds like this is the way it will be for a while. Thanks for all the support. We appreciate it & the warm welcome as well.

Welcome to YT.

Is Eukanuba the same food that the breeder had him on? If not, you should get the same food that he was eating before. Keep supplementing him and give him some plain boiled chicken all broken up to keep his blood sugar levels normal. Good luck.

Sounds to me like he wasn't really ready to be away from mom yet. Did the breeder give you ANY indication how well he was doing eating on his own? 8 weeks is really too early for them to be away from mom and siblings. If it were me, I'd try anything under the sun to get him to eat. Yogurt, cottage cheese, oatmeal, whatever it takes. He might not know how to eat anything other than from mom, so he might need to be shown how to eat. I always start my guys out with oatmeal. You can put some nutrical in it too. Just make it with milk instead of water. And pour more milk on it to thin it out. The oatmeal is good for them and the nutrical increaes their appitite. I wish you well. Hand feeding is also a consideration. Until he's confident with his new surroundings and with you, he might be apprehensive about eating. Good luck and keep us posted.

Yes-the breeder did assure us that Eukanuba was what he was eating. Maybe we should try oatmeal with the puppy formula. We are not quite sure at this point how great the breeder was-but are more concerned with his well-being & will deal w/her later. Thanks for the idea....

We found baked chicken breast chopped real fine and bit of cottage cheese worked for us, Hope he is doing much better, please keep us updated. Patti
also to soften the euknuba dry food is a good idea.

First things first

Welcome to YT

I am very sorry you are having problems with Tucker. Having him flown in at such a early age no doubt put a tremendous amount of stress on the little guy --

You might try grinding up some of the puppy kibble and add to that a tiny little bit of high quality canned puppy food mixed with some water. Then maybe you can "tease" him into eating a bit off your finger. Some boiled chicken brest put through a blender to make a yucky looking mush might also help enhance the flavor enough to get him to eat.

Good luck and please please keep us posted

google hypoglycemia for pups..... Sounds like what you pup has

With my little girl I had to feed her every two hours for (4 t0 6 weeks) around the clock..... Yes that means getting up every two hours in the middle of the night. Then we slowly worked her to normal feedings for a pup.

We fed her gerber baby food (only the meat flavored baby food).. You can also try gerber chicken sticks... (this was vet recommended)

I agree with the hypoglocemia, it is probably a major player in your problem. If you haven't already, you should take your little one for a good checkup including bloodwork. You could have additional problems as well.

What is your baby on Flagyl for? I've taken that before and remember not having much of an appetite - and I normally eat like a horse. If you haven't already, try boiling some chicken and try giving little tiny pieces. Many yorkies like fruit, too - so try some banana, apple, mango or papaya.

Welcome to YT - good luck with your new baby. Please keep us posted on how Tucker is doing and post some photos when he is feeling a little better.
